While some may disagree, I’m going to go out on a limb and say every mountain biker can benefit from a dropper post, including kids. PNW Components likely agrees, and this week they announced a dropper post specifically designed for children called the Fern.
Naturally the post offers a short travel range — 90mm — and also comes in a kids-bike-compatible 27.2mm diameter. The Fern is externally routed which seems like a smart choice since many kids’ mountain bike frames aren’t drilled for internal cable routing. Perhaps most importantly, PNW has tweaked the internal air cartridge so little riders can use their weight to push the seat back down. Officially the brand says the post is designed to work for riders weighing between 44 and 110lbs.
Priced at $199, the Fern is in line with the most affordable droppers PNW offers. That price doesn’t include a remote lever, though PNW says any one of their lever will work. Bonus: five percent of sales proceeds go to Trips for Kids.
