Mountain Biking Catch-22

#98 of 105 mountain bike trails in Indiana
#28,933 in the world

This 1/3-mile trail is the first phase of a challenging track that tests riders' skills. Don't expect flow here, the trail's rock steps, rock gardens, roots and skinnies are more like puzzles to solve through bike handling, speed control, and wheel lifts. The point is to get through the trail without dabbing. The trail begins with a few rock dodges and then bears right into a drop down a flight of rock stairs that immediately turn left climbing another rock and logover. The trail shifts right into a climb strewn with uneven surfaces, tree squeezes and rocks. After crossing a narrow bridge riders dive down into a valley and pop up on the opposite ridge that is followed to the left. A short climb then turns right between two trees, then theres a small rock ledge leading to a curved 8-inch skinny and a stony logover. A small drop down leads to a quick up with a rock/root step-up. After a short straight section there's a sharp switchback down and to the left that then runs through a rock garden. Following more rocks and roots riders climb onto a narrow rock-paved section and then turn right. After dipping down there a choice to pop up and enter a short but difficult rock garden or to follow the easier, lower B-line. A punchy climb leads to a huck off a root and a stone ramp at the bottom that drops to a flat surface. A quick turn left dodges a thick vine and a choice of a rocky step-up and tree squeeze or a lower curving 5 1/2-inch skinny situated in a rock garden. A climb switches back left over some rock drainage and becomes steeper and steeper. At the high point there's an optional 8-inch skinny with high exposure to the left. At the top the trail meets a rooty off-camber section. The narrow trail continues along more stones and roots. Riders can then opt for a narrow rock ledge to the right or dip down to the rock-paved B-line below. After a small rock step-up and more rock dodges, the trail curves right and finishes with an off-camber, rooted drop-down back to the Perimeter Loop.
