Colorado Springs claims to find 60 miles of illegal trails
Colorado Springs, Colorado officials claim to have cataloged over 60 miles of illegal trails in Red Rock Canyon Open Space, though it’s not clear who created the trails or how the number was calculated. All of the illegal trails are located within a 1.25 square mile area. The head of the Medicine Wheel Trail Advocates, Cory Sutela, told Out There Colorado that there is an imbalance in the area’s trail system. “Instead of trying to find a constructive solution, they’re just randomly closing trails outside of a master plan process,” Sutela said.
Mountain bikers in the area point to the problem as a symptom of a lack of mountain bike opportunities. Town officials are working on restoring the land and closing the unofficial trails and are partnering with the Forest Service and El Paso county to raise awareness about illegal trails.
