Are Your Local MTB Trails Any Good?

Singletracks wants to know how you rate your local mountain bike trails.

No matter where you live, you probably have at least one local mountain bike trail to ride. In many places the trails are great, while in others the trails will just have to do. We want to know how you rate your local MTB trails!

I have great trails all around me here in St George, UT, but I’d still like to ride more places. Even good trails get mundane.

The trails in the Tidewater, Virginia area are very good. My favorite park is Pocahontas State Park, near Richmond, Virginia.

Blessed to live in the East Tennessee/Western N.C./Southwest Va. area. So much good riding of all types within an hour of our house. MTB, gravel, and road rides are aplenty.

I've had two main local trails areas in my riding life - Colorado Springs and Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The trails in the Springs are mostly quite natural and all-purpose trails. There is/are lots of miles, few man-made features to speak of, a good amount of elevation, no bugs or spiders (yay!) and enough lower elevation trails to ride much of the winter. Around Ulaanbaatar, there are tons of trails, all the trails are wonderfully raw, each ride feels like a backcountry adventure, the wildlife is amazing including the wolves and wild horses, :) no bugs or spiders (yay!), and you never see another rider on the trail. Many local trails include a lot of hike-a-bike due to the steepness and no switchbacks, but that makes for world class, insanely fast descents. The only negative I can think of is the brutal winters. Each year, you are off the bike from mid-November until early March. So you have to rebuild your base each spring.

That’s why I bought a gravel bike. To ride during the winter so I don’t lose my bike legs. It’s totally different but it’s not that bad

The Boise is known for great trails, over 200 miles and adding all the time.
Buttery smooth and fast. Technical, not so much. A smooth, easy culture to match the trail system.

Trail where I live (Lakeview OR) are okay, but none of them are specific mtb trails. Our ski area didn't open this year due to lack of snow, I am planning to arrange to build trails there, get some use out of it even when we have a bad winter.

If you were going to do one trail in COS, I'd say make it the Buckhorn Trail to Captain Jack's loop. Buckhorn is a bear of a climb, but Jack's is a great flowy downhill, and then you can link in to the Chutes at the bottom for a long descent into town. Otherwise, there are a lot of great areas - Ute Valley and Palmer Park are both more challenging overall, Red Rock Canyon is a good assortment of tech and flow, and Pulpit Rock/Austin Bluffs Open Space is kind of an up-and-coming area that has a few really nice blues and blacks.

Local Twin Cities trails are solid flow with enough challenging options in 10-15 mile loops, and Northern Minnesota Iron Range (Cuyuna, Tioga, Redhead, Giants Ridge, Duluth) is under rated destination.

The area around Newark Delaware (yes, Delaware) has over 80 miles of singletrack spread across a half-dozen parks. White Clay Creek SP, Middle Run, Redd Park, Fair Hill NRMA just over the Maryland line and linkable from the others, Iron Hill, Brandywine... all excellent XC trails with rocks, roots and some wooden features to spice things up. What is lacked in elevation is made up for in fast flowey quality.

Vancouver BC. World class Whistler bike park is just one of dozens of incredible trail systems we are fortunate to have. Many of which are known only to locals. Everything from a Sunday ride with the whole family to "hold my beer and watch this. Gonna
send it,eh!"

Despite any elevation, I ride my local trails 2-3 times a week. I do escape the Florida heat during the summer.
Things I like about our network:
1) Multiple access points spread across the 80 mile network.
2) Though mostly beginner and intermediate trails, there are enough technical challenges to keep me occupied on days I am so inspired.
3) Trails are rideable year round and handle rain exceptionally well.
4) Campgrounds available at three locations along the system.
Again, despite the lack of any downhill runs, the trails are enjoyable. Judging by the amount of out of state license plates seen in the parking lots there seem to be many folks that agree.

I live in a state park in a village next to a resort. The resort is on public land that's designated 'intensive use'. I have my own private trails, and I take advantage of closed areas of the resort year round. They are fully open for winter currently (no bikes), but I have a DH trail packed out with snowshoes that's alongside a ski trail, for my FS fat bike. In summer when they lift bikes, I can ride home on my DH bike at the end of the day. I'm grandfathered into an epic, unique situation. I just can't post my 'backstage' adventures to social media, at the request of the resort manager.

I ride mostly at the Palos South trails. Just a fun bunch of trails totalling about 29 miles overall. All handmade by volunteers. Close enough to home to grab an after work ride. Gets no better than that!

I'm in very southern Maryland. I have a pretty great trail that is ten minutes from home. So I love that. But ALL other trails are over an hour away. Really awesome riding around 2-3 hours but that's not really local. Still able to ride multiple times a week and through winter so I love it. I'd still mark my vote as "okay" just due to lack of close by variety.

Jeff, you probably heard it already living in Ga, but Gwinnett county has the worst bike trails I've ever ridden. Not to mention they haven't opened any new trails in the 20+ years I've been a resident. Millions spent on other recreation but nothing earmarked or spent on biking. We have Yellow River, Tribble Mill and Harbins Park. When I ride at Allatoona, it makes Gwinnet trails feel like they were built a decade ago.

Manchester MD. Closet park is a county park where most of the "trails" were old fire-roads and lumber cuts. Over the years, working with the park service we have added some single-track and are slowly, but surely, eliminating the erosion laden trails with better bike friendly trails. The thing I love the most about the park is the ability to get between 120 and 150 ft of ascent for each mile over the "100 per 1" in most of areas around here.

The best trails were engineered and constructed my local wildlife. Deer are amazing trail builders! Rocky Mountains, Colorado.

I regret never concentrating on Colorado while on my cross country treks. Ridden some lower elevation, arid trails (Phil’s World, Fruita) but haven’t hit the real mountains. Need to remedy that.
