Popular destinations-easy. Go to Singletracks, Youtube, etc and find a group of trails that suits you.
Not so popular or known- I grab a state travel guide, go through it completely, find cool towns with a good vibe, then start looking for trails around that area. Call a local bike shop and confirm info about the trails. I always stop in and thank them personally. Funny how they always remember talking with you when you do stop in.

Bike stuff is an add-on for most of my travels. I try to find the best local spot to fit with all my travels. I have ridden some great local gems as a result. Places that would not be a destination by themselves but provide a unique ride with local flavor.

Combination of sources - just keeping up to speed on popular destinations including Singletracks (in particular the 5 to Ride series), then once I know I'm going to a particular destination I'll use a combination of Google searches for articles and then Trailforks to get dialed in on specific trails.

I often use Google Maps satellite view to search for game trails to follow or find trails not on Singletracks or other apps.

Like most I research my destination areas using Singletracks, TrailForks, MTBProject, etc. They are helpful, but I find the more I ride an area the more I appreciate what it has to offer. This is true for Bend, Moab, Bentonville and Brevard. That said a few of my favorite rides…Susanville (Ca.), Switchgrass (Kansas) and Versailles SP (Indiana) were just blind luck discoveries as I was traveling across the country.
