If you don’t feel like working yourself back into shape this spring, check out the E+ Mountain Bike from Electric Motion Systems (EMS). The E+ is pretty much a real mountain bike with 26″ knobby tires and Shimano components with a kick – a hub mounted brushless permanent magnet electric motor capable of producing up to 1,000 watts of power. I’m not sure what all that means but it sounds heavy (no weight specs available online).

EMS claims the E+ mountain bike has a range of about 20 miles on a single charge or 40+ miles with “moderate pedaling.” There are two versions of this bike: the “street legal” version which goes up to 20mph and the “off road” version that will get you 30+mph. I don’t know how fast you ride but for me 30mph is pretty fast, especially on twisty singletrack. Just imagine: burning down the trails, completely silent (unlike those crude dirt bikes) with only the wind in your face and not a bit of sweat on your brow. Sweet.

But before you gear up to take this bike out on the trail, you’ll want to consider the sticker price: $3,495 for the basic version (kickstand included) while the off-road version starts at $4,094.  I think maybe I’ll just put in some more time at the gym to develop my own motor 😉
