Mountain Biking Ahuriri Valley
#113 of 193 mountain bike trails in South Island
This ride takes four wheel tracks up the Ahuriri Valley into the dramatic alpine landscapes of the Southern Alps.
It starts out easy but gradually gets harder. Most of the way is on four wheel drive tracks, often with occasional washouts. They can be challenging but are short. There are some very small creek crossings until you get in about 15km when you cross Canyon Creek. You'll probably get wet feet there.
There are three back-country huts along the way. Ahuriri Base Hut comes up after about 8km, followed by Shamrock Hut in another 8km and then Hagens Hut in another 6km. If you make it to Canyon Creek you've done well and will have taken in the best of the stunning scenery. River crossings get serious after Shamrock Hut and the trail gets harder. Turn round and head back down the valley when you've had enough.

From Omarama, drive south towards Queenstown on Highway 8 for 15km, then turn right into Birchwood Road and go up it for 25km and park at the DOC sign and interpretive panels overlooking the river. Birchwood Road is gravel but is usually in good condition.
This track takes you up a dramatic alpine valley, surrounded by serious mountains. It starts out easy and gradually gets harder so you can go up it till you get out of your comfort zone, then turn back.
