Mountain Biking Amole Canyon
#81 of 283 mountain bike trails in New Mexico
This is a collection of service road, double track, ATV track, and a smidge of singletrack, all of which is there to provide a network of cross country ski trails. Most of the tread is wide, nontechnical, and there are only a couple of tough hills, but one is a doozy.

From Taos, go south on 68. At the south end of town go left on 518. Follow 518 just over 14 miles and look for a sign indicating forest road 703. Go left on 703 and follow it to the parking area.

While these make for very nice ski trails, they leave a lot to be desired for biking. The tread is rarely interesting and the trails are either flat or rutted. The forest is very nice, though and the surroundings are quite pleasant. I rode the trail with Bill S. Preston, Esq, and Theodore "Ted" Logan who said the trail is "most tranquil," so I gave it two stars rather than just the one earned by what is actually under your knobbies. The trail has less rock and sand than others in the area, so it doesn't drain well after a dump. And bring some deet--no shortage of biting flies.
