Mountain Biking Arizona Trail: Passage 39 Grand Canyon North Rim
#265 of 417 mountain bike trails in Arizona
This passage of the AZT is a mix of singletrack and doubletrack. It is best ridden north to south to take advantage of the elevation change. Traveling north to south, you encounter several fast downhill runs with only one difficult climb. You hit several gradual climbs and flats. All in all, there is no tech to speak of, but it is a fun passage for its speed and flow (heading north to south). The bugs can be bad in places at least for Arizona standards. The forest is pretty, but not exceptional, like Passage 40. The views are limited. Riding north to south, you can end your ride with time spent at the North Rim Lodge which is a National Historic Site and rightfully so. It is a beautiful structure with breathtaking views of the Grand Canyon and a beautiful dining room looking over the canyon. The dining room has a reasonably priced menu. Breakfast and lunch are recommended. Dinner is by rsvp only, and reservations are difficult to secure.

You can start at either end of the trail of course. For the northern terminus, which is called the Kaibab Plateau Trailhead, head south from Jacob Lake 26.4 miles to Forest Road 611. Turn left on FR 611. Follow FR-611 1.4 mile and turn right onto FR-610. Continue on FR-610 for 4.8 mile to the trailhead parking which will be on your right. For the southern terminus, you must enter the national park, which is a $35/car fee, if you do not have an annual or lifetime pass. The trailhead inside the park is called North Kaibab Trailhead. From Jacob Lake, travel south of Hwy 67 31 miles to the park entrance. Then continue on Hwy 67 for 10.5 miles to the North Kaibab Trailhead. There is limited parking here due to all the park visitors. If you're lucky, your find a spot in the small parking lot. If not, you can park along the highway in multiple spots or go back to the road that takes you to the Widforss Traihead and park at that trailhead. You can pick up the AZT here too.
