Mountain Biking Arizona Trail Passage #34 San Francisco Peaks
#93 of 417 mountain bike trails in Arizona
This section may be ridden as an out-and-back or by riding the road to the base of Snowbowl and descending from there. Climbing the singletrack is mostly mellow with just a few small-ring bits and no hike-a-bike, highly recommended. The descent from Snowbowl is the money, though, dropping like 1600 feet through aspens, pines and boulders, nearly all downhill, slim and speedy, with killer switchbacks and hillside traverses offering plentiful roots, rocks and other things to hop. Combine with the Hart Prairie segment for a 20-some mile intermediate epic.

To ride this section alone: Head out HWY 180 from Flagstaff and make a right on Snowbowl Rd. In less than a mile the road makes a sharp right. Look for wooden Arizona Trail signs off either side of the road (hard to see) and park in the gravel. If you come to a hard left turn you missed it - turn around and try again.
This passage is a total of 35 miles, however the section from Snow Bowl Rd to Aspen Corner is a MUST RIDE. Follow it up with the descent down to FR 418 and you'll smile all the way down - so fun!!
Thank |Best during the monsoons (July-September) when the trail is tacky and the forest is super green and filled with wildflowers and mushrooms.
