A mountain bike with muddy tires is parked next to a silver SUV in a gravel area. The bike features prominent wheels and a water bottle holder, and is set against a backdrop of trees. A second bike and a helmet can also be seen nearby. Arrowhead Park mountain bike trail.

Mountain Biking Arrowhead Park

****   Add a review
#59 of 403 mountain bike trails in Georgia
#1,548 in the world

This trail system was originally developed back in 2001 but was destroyed by the Mother's Day tornado of 2008. Through the hard work of the Ocmulgee Mountain Bike Association and Bibb County, the trail system has been redesigned and rebuilt. The new trail opened up 2 years ago (2011) and is better than ever! This is some of the most demanding singletrack in Middle Georgia with great climbs and fast downhills. The park also offers lake access and camping.

There are two loops that are well marked, a Beginner loop as well as an Advanced loop. The Beginner loop takes out a couple of the longer climbs but it's still a challenging ride. To reach both trail heads you'll take the first paved road to your left once you enter the part, at the bottom of the hill you'll see the trail kiosk with the Advanced trail starting to the left of the bathrooms. To reach the Beginner trailhead you'll need to ride up the road a few hundred feet and you'll see the trailhead on your left. An additional 2 or so miles of trail to be built finished later this year! Park fee is $5 per vehicle.

Getting there
West of Interstate 475. Take the Hwy 80 exit and head west for 3 miles. Take a right on Tidwell Road until it dead ends. Take a left on Columbus Road and take a right shortly thereafter into Arrowhead Park.

Go through the gate, and when the road splits, fork left. Take your next left and park in front of the bathrooms. There are no signs showing the trail routes, but a spraypainted red parking block in the lot shows where the trail starts.

Great local trail if living in or passing through Middle Georgia. When riding clockwise on the Green loop, it begins with a few steep climbs and continues for great ride that allows for some excellent lake views. While a Green trail is typically for beginners, this loop offers a few challenges that may result in walking your bike up and down some sections due to roots combined with uphill climbs and descents. Overall, it is an excellent trail to enjoy the outdoors just outside of Macon. As a bonus, you will most likely see deer as your ride deep into the woods. Currently, the gate fee is $6 for a party of two, unless you have purchased the GA State Park annual pass.

Many improvements on this trail recently. If you're traveling I75 thru Ga this trail is a must. There is a fee of $5 per carload but worth every penny. Good camping and boating here as well.

The trails are better than I remember. Well maintained and they are building new ones. Yeah! I got in more than 8 miles and didn't ride it all. I'm looking forward to returning and exploring the new stuff.

    Nice trail
    Lots of uphill
    Downhills are short but fun
Last downhill section has a few 2-2.5ft drop offs

I will be back. Very flowy for the lack of elevation (less than 1000' per 10 miles) The "advanced" trail (red blaze) is not advanced but fun none the less. The description for the "advanced" loop says 7 miles but new trail has been added. It is closer to 9 miles now. I ran out of daylight so I didn't get a chance to ride the easier trail. If you are driving north on 75 and need to kill time so you don't hit the Atlanta rush hour, I recommend stopping and getting a ride in. If you are driving South and are all stressed from the traffic, then stop and ride!

Good for a quick workout if you're in the area. I rode the whole loop which is all XC style single track. Lots of short up hill bursts with a couple fun downs. These trails don't seem to get a lot of use, when I was there I was clearing spiderwebs in the evening. A good bit of downed branches and overgrown sections. $5 entry fee and the trails are marked pretty well.

Decent little trail if your in Macon. A lot more elevation than I expected. Not a ton of flow, but a couple fun descents.

Fun trail, definitely worth a stop by if you are in the area. I think it's the best trail in Macon. Some unique features make it stand out like the old school bathroom structures that look like bomb shelters, random concrete picnic tables in the middle of no where, and the section of trail that rides through a barn. Short punchy climbs that make you work, plus a ton of flow sections (not sure what the person was talking about in another review that said there was "no real flow", it has a ton of flow!).

Only complaint which seems to be consistent is that it was a little overgrown in place which lead to thorns that rip your legs and arms and also allowed ticks to jump on me. Even with this, it is still well worth the ride.

Great trail - some steep climbs, but short enough not to kill an intermediate rider! A few nice bridges and such, and a GORGEOUS stream crossing on the 'advanced ' trail - which I suspect is marked that way due to the steeps...
If you're in the area, a MUST ride opportunity!!

Great trip. I read all the review and made the trip out here and was not disappointed. It is worth the small $3 fee to enter the park. Well marked tail. Lots of wildlife running around on the trail. my only complaint is it trail needs some maintenance. I had welts across my face and arms from all the vines and branches hanging onto the trail.

Woo hoo....the bridges are in the new section and the trail is in great shape. People please ride it, the trail will only get better with use. This is now 8.5 miles of fun and guts. I am a strong intermediate(can ride most stuff just not at rocket speed) and it took me 70 minutes. We are lucky to have a quality ride like this in middle Ga.

Stopped here while I was traveling through Georgia. Sunny day in the high 60's with no rain the past week and the trail was closed. Apparently this is a common problem here

I'm in agreement. Seems like this trail is closed most of the winter when people actually want to mountain bike. Doesn't help that the people at arrowhead will tell you the trail is open when the "closed" sign is posted by the gate.

Either fix the trail to deal with water or accept the fact that this trail remains wet all winter and deal with it. I fully understand riding in the wet can damage trails but in all fairness, the water itself flowing down a trail that has no drainage does far more damage than any tire tracks.

I'm totally fine with riding in wet or rutted/rocky conditions. In fact, I'd rather ride in rutted/rocky conditions than ride a trail that doesn't flow and is never open.

I never used to like this trail because it doesn't flow very well. The entire trail is riddled with fast sections spoiled by tight off camber turns.

However, the newest section is very enjoyable. There are still a lot of unnecessarily tight off cambered turns followed by an immediate and steep uphill but it's still a fun section. There are 3 (I think) bridges that still need to be built so watch at the beginning but once those are complete, it should be good.

I see you have now complained about two of the local trails in Middle GA. Arrowhead has only been closed for being dangerous once and that was after a tornado detroyed the place. The park currently has an agreement with OMBA (local IMBA/SORBA chapter) to close the trail after there has been a bunch of rain. In case you dont know this riding wet trails causes damage and from the sounds of your post here as well as on the LH Thomson trail, you dont take part in the club. Please come to a club meeting and talk about how trails should not be manicured and enjoyable to ride. I would love to know how you would like to see the trails maintained. The next meeting will be at yout favorite sidwalk in the woods LH Thomson Thursday September 5th @7 pm.

I've raced here 3 times. I kind of have a love/hate relationship with this trail. It's fun, but definitely a workout! It has some technical areas and for some reason I always feel like I'm climbing more than anything! I'd enjoy this trail more if I was in better shape, but that's my fault!

Rider questions

Q: Do u have to wear a helment
A: Don't be an idiot. Wear a helmet.

Q: where is the trail
A: Once you go into the park follow the signs to bike trail head. I think it is the first left at the bottom of the hill.
