Mountain Biking Art Smith Trail
#263 of 1,004 mountain bike trails in California
Be prepared to CLIMB! The trail start with a steep climb with gnarly
switchbacks. After finally leveling off a bit you have some nice sweeping
ribbons of singletrack through the scenic mountain side, then back to more
climbing. Some sections are quite steep and technical with rocks and tight
switchbacks. Coming back is really fun as it's almost all downhill. Some
sections you can just let it go but mostly you'll be riding the brakes through
the steep downhill and tight switchbacks. You'll definitely enjoy some
incredible mountain views and most likely come across some hikers.

From Palm Desert, jump on 74 where it meets 111 and head South till you get
to the very base of the mountain. Just before the road starts to climb, on your
right hand side is the trailhead. You'll most likely see cars parked right off the
road. There's practically no signage so climb the little ridge near the road and
you see where to go from there (see album).
If you can endure the climb you will be rewarded . Singletrack heaven! Awesome downhill on the way back.

I had a little trouble finding my way from the trailhead parking lot but eventually got on track. The trail was steep and rocky as described with very tight switchbacks in places. I climbed to the junction with Hopalong Cassidy trail and turned on it to head back toward town.
Thank |Plush ribbons of singletrack nestled in the mountain side with just breathtaking views. Serious climbing, so eat your Wheaties before you go. Wicked tight switchback! Coming back downhill is fun but lacks some flow.
