Mountain Biking Big Creek Trail

***   Add a review
#39 of 90 mountain bike trails in Kansas
#7,107 in the world

This is an enjoyable beginner/intermediate trail that follows alongside Big Creek. The total distance is about 8.75 miles round trip (out and back) and can be ridden or hiked in either direction, so be cautious of other users. The trail is mostly wooded but does have some open grassy areas. It has low clearance trees, nicely falls and rises with the terrain with some short steep areas and a few stumps to run over. The trail has 3 sections.

I followed the directions to the trail but could not find the trail. I road a paved trail instead.

Couldn't locate the trail. Found one unlabeled path that was very overgrow that may have been the trail, but was unrideable because of the overgrowth covering the path.

    This trail has potential.

The trees and foliage are creeping into the trail space. Some neighborhoods near the trail use the wooded area as dumping grounds.

An active trail steward strategy could take this short trail to the next level.

Exelent review below, need it to find the way. Trail kinda shows up on Google maps "bike" layer. The best single track is easily the part by trailer park. There're lots of steep mound things to climb and exposure to creek bank where you seriously could go in drink 8 ft down if you get off trail. and a little trestle over a log. :) there may be trail connecting along the creek from there back to the next section to, not sure if it's off limits. I followed trail on top of dikes for the return. Nice ride.

I ride this trail at least once a week. Fun trail with tight turns unexpected obstacles and even some "hidden" features that most people wouldn't see only going through it one way. It can be a fast trail for experienced riders but can easily be traversed at slower speeds. I have never seen anyone else out on this trail but I do know others use it. If you ride from start to finish it can get boring in the middle where there is really no trail to follow but once you get past the college and down into the trees it is a blast. Make sure you check the map beforehand or else you may not know where to go, as this trail is broken into three or four sections. It starts on the south bend of the bypass. You ride into a group of trees then through an open park. After that there is a small opening where another short run of trail is (not marked), after that it opens to the FHSU cross country course leading you under one bridge across a road and then snakes through an obstacle course. Eventually you end up on some blacktop heading west until you reach an entrance to a trailer park. Head down the entrance and right after you cross over the creek the "middle section" of the trail begins. This will lead you on to another blacktop where you again head west to the bypass. Strait west of the bypass is the next trailhead. Follow that trail to the end then head on back. The trail is not marked well but is fun if you know were to go.
