Mountain Biking Borrego / Winsor Descent

  Add a review
#175 of 283 mountain bike trails in New Mexico
#14,310 in the world

One nice thing about the Winsor Trail is that it starts at the elevation of the
town of Santa Fe. That means the lower section can be ridden late into the
fall and in the early spring. The tricky thing is that it starts at 7200 feet but
climbs to 10,300 feet where people are skiing in the winter.

It seems that many mountain bikers treat the Winsor Trail as a shuttle /
one-way descent. This trail posting describes a way to continue to get a
good 2400 feet of descent over seven miles after the upper part of Winsor
is under snow. Depending on the storm, this trail may also get snow, so
check before you get too committed to this ride.

The Ride: The Borrego Trail TH is just past Hyde Memorial Park. You ride
Borrego Trail for 1.57 miles before you intersect Winsor Trail. It is not all
descending, but the 600 plus feet of the climb portion is good fun.

Turn left on Winsor and look forward to crossing Tesuque Creek 18 times
before you reach the bottom.

Note: If you are not looking for a shuttle descent but are willing to do
some climbing, you can also choose to ride Borrego down to Winsor Trail,
ride Winsor as far up or down (left or right) as you want, then return to
your car climbing up Bear Wallow Trail. Bear Wallow (#182) is .82 miles
downstream from the intersection of Borrego and Winsor.
