Mountain Biking Broad Mt. Loop
#123 of 293 mountain bike trails in Pennsylvania
This trail is a rocky double track with some small climbs and two stream crossings. The Highlight is an overlook of the entire Lehigh Gorge(I believe it is called buzzard's point) Proceed straight down the first trail untile you come to a T at the T take a right and follow the rocky downhill past the powerlines. Follow the powerlines until the forest road branches off to the right. Countinue until you reach the overlook. Get back on the trail following the ridgeline past Glen Okono Falls and through the stream. After the second stream crossing make a right and ride back out to 93N Your car should be a 1/2 mi. up the road on the right! Have fun the views are great, take time to check out the stream for Glen Okono falls you won't be disappointed!

From downtown Jim Thorpe take 209S to 93N proceed up the hill just over 3 miles. At the top of this hill will be a parking area on the right hand side. Park here and proceed down the forest road on the righthand side of the parking area.
Agreed, the trail is terrible for bike riding, the big rocks make it a bad ride, stay away.
Thank |This trail was by far the most miserable bike ride of my life. 90% of the trail is nothing but giant gray rocks, and riding on them is extremely uncomfortable. I ended up pushing my bike most of the second half of the trail because it was so bad. It's really sad that this used to be a really nice trail but now it's entirely ruined since these rocks were dumped. Next time I want to see the overlook, I'll climb up Onoko Falls and just walk there instead.
Thank |This trail (fire road) is absolutely horrible. I guess the layer of big 3-4" rocks that covers the entire fire road is a new thing, since the old reviews here indicate that this is a good trail for biking. It is not. Presumably the rocks were added (by the game commission? or the county?) so that trucks on the road can go 5mph faster or something like that... but they also make it miserable for biking. I made it about 2 miles in (from the upper lot on route 93) before giving up and turning around. On the way out, I stopped at the lower lot about a mile south on route 93; there too, the trail/fire road is covered in rocks of the perfect size to make it virtually impossible to bike on.
Edited to add: I know some people like to bike on "rocky" trails, technical trails, etc. This is not that. This is biking on a layer of nothing but uneven rock, with no dirt in sight. Other reviews call this "fast" and "not strenuous" -- that must have been before they poured the rocks. Now, it is certainly not fast, and it takes a large amount of effort just to stay upright.
Thank |Fast rocky double track with long uphill and a long downhill. Good overlook and nice workout ride. There were lots of bikers when I was out there. Do 2 loops if one is not enough.
Thank |trail was alright pretty easy. Saw a big black bear about 1 mile into it.... it was about 20 yards from the trail. Just looked at us and walked off. About a half mile later saw another.. probably the same one walking towards the trail. Keep your eyes open.
Thank |Trail was enjoyable. Not strenuous or highly technical but a nice ride. We did run across 3 black bears during the loop. Not surprising since the whole thing is surrounded by blueberry bushes.
Thank |Def just a fire road. Little on the boring side other then the awesome view!!!! Recommend parking one car down @ Lehigh Gorge Park and take another up so you can finish the ride with the steep trail down into the Gorge.* Review edited 6/5/2008
Thank |It felt like there was more dirt road than doubletrack. There were a few sections with some rocks, but they were all small and non-technical. Lots of gradual, rolling hills. The stream crossings were shallow and simple when I did this in mid-July (probably the hottest week of the year). The overlook described above was actually a short bit off the trail to the left (if you're doing the loop clockwise). There was a single track trail close to the halfway point that lead down, with a few steep parts, into the gorge; I didn't get too far since I didn't feel like riding back up in 95 degree heat. But that section was by far more interesting than the Broad Mtn loop.
Thank |We hit Jim Thorpe ready to ride American Standard but found out at the local bike shop that the trail was closed. We opted for the Broad Mountain loop instead and purchased a photocopied topo of the trail for a buck. The scenery is nice, not too many climbs either. Fast doubletrack, good ride in the area, though I suspect there are better choices.
