Mountain Biking Carl Gulch Shuttle
#273 of 319 mountain bike trails in Idaho
Trail and Carl Gulch are good shuttles from the top of Stein Mtn. They are
pretty short from the lower Sheep Creek access given the time it takes to drive
up to the start.
The upper Stein Mtn section is steep descending. Then a sidehill sections to a
flat ridge and a trail junction. Taking the right hand trail through the woods will
get you to Trail and Carl Gulch.
From here you will sidehill through the woods then come on onto the center of
the ridge and stay there until the trail hits Road 077.
This is the lower shuttle dropoff and the junction w/ Trail Gulch.
Go right and drop into the drainage. After a mile there is a climb then the trail
descends to the old Guard Station on US93
Please Close ALL Gates between June 1 and Sept 1.

This shuttle ride has two access points.
Early season (late May) go north on US93 from North Fork to the Sheep Creek
Road (USFS Road 077). Follow the signs and the road up and up staying on 077
for about 8 miles where the road crosses over a prominent ridge.
Late season (July) take the 4th of July Creek Road (USFS Road 071), about 5
miles SE of North Fork and 14 miles north of Salmon. Follow this road all the
way up the canyon, the road gets rocky (well...rockier) after it leaves the
canyon. Stay on the main road and you come to Stein Mtn Lookout. The trail
starts here.
