Chief Joseph Pass is located just over a mile east of Lost Trail Pass on Montana- 43. Chief Joseph Pass area trails can be accessed from four places. First from the large parking lot on the pass for the XC trail system. Good loops start along Trail Creek Road #106 about 6 miles further east on MT43. May Creek Campground is a couple miles even further east and 2 trails start there. Finally, you can access the CDT and Ruby Creek Trail from Big Hole Pass east of Gibbonsville, ID. on US93 south of Lost Trail Pass.
