Mountain Biking Chimney Rock

****   Add a review
#9 of 111 mountain bike trails in New Jersey
#840 in the world
This is a rocky, technical singletrack. There are some smooth trails and hilly sections. Tends to stay real wet several days after a rain.

I have been here several times and always a good workout. The blue trail tends to stay wet after rain but not terrible. Blue has some fun skinnys and some nice flow. There are also some cool rock features to ride over. Trails are well maintained. Red trail is nice with some rock gardens, switchbacks and some rock bridge features to ride over. Also has a giant log pile which is pretty challenging. Parking is tough on the weekends and the sheriff's officers love giving tickets to people who park on the grass or side of the road so don't do it unless you don't mind paying a fine. There is also a small white trail off of blue that has some decent climbs and some small rock gardens throughout.

Very tough, technical and exciting... the scenic lookout of the quarry was amazing.

I tried this place a couple of years ago and had some trouble, cardio and skills wise. Recently ridden it and let me tell you. It's awesome. The red trail is challenging with some rocks and roots and some decent flow. But the highlight of this place are the boulder features. Whoever built the wooden ramps onto the boulders did a great job. I had a lot of fun trying to clear all these features. The blue trail has some drainage issues so I wouldn't go after a good rain. Let it dry out first. The blue trail also had some well built rideable boulders and a tricky wooden plank obstacle that needs some balance and skill to clean. My only complaint is I couldn't find the orange or yellow trails or how to connect the red trails to these other tails. Not well marked. Maybe next time I'll find them.

Not taking anything away from those that love this trail network but comparing these trails to the others I've ridden I'd rate this as average. While it's been a while since I rode here what I recall was lots of loose rocks, so-so flow and tons of chatter. I love a good challenge but this is just not my cup of tea.

I know is my favorite park and that I give it 4 stars. This park is one of the greatest park I ever been. Chimney rock is a park that will push you to your limits. I will not recommend it to starters due that is difficulties are for experts of intermediate . It has a lot trails and options on how to get back into the main parking lot. This is the only park I ever see with bike repair stations which is awesome. Park has many different terrain. I'm giving it 4 stars just because the lack of maintenance it gets and also guide signs. but overall is a mountain bike park that will make sure you have a lot fun and gain experiences as mountain biker. Excellent trail overall.

Some parts can get more technical then others the three trails give a little bit of variety there are drainage issues on the blue trail and the water can often stay there for 4-7 days after rainfall

I went today for first time. Very nice trail with nice uphill and downhill. Not technical, but requiere some expertise.

A post before this gave this trail a bad rating. Simply put ... Nonsense .. This is a wonderful trail system that is well maintained and very diverse and challenging with a lot of vertical if you know where to go .. Please disregard the previous posters failed attempt to downplay this trail so they can hog it for themselves .. Shame on you!

Spoiler alert....this trail network sucks. In the minds of many riders, "technical" is the term used for trails lined with brick sized rocks. Sounds like fun? Picture this...if you can imagine enjoying a ride along a busted cobblestone road in a horse drawn carriage, with square wheels, then this trail is for you! Plus, the trails flow like old crank case sludge on a frigid day. Trust me, I'm doing you a favor so that you don't waste your time and energy or bother punishing your joints and the joints of your favorite rig. Go elsewhere unless you seek to suffer retinal detachment at annoyingly slow speeds.

Fun and challenging trail in through hilly forest. People aren't kidding about the amount of rocks on this trail - it's a beautiful rock garden. Lots of trail miles with technical obstacles and elevation so pace yourself on your first time. My only issue was the amount of marking on the trail - the park could use a few more markings in some areas. It is very easy for new riders to get lost without a trail map, so make sure to bring one along. Overall, a great park for experienced bikers and I will definitely be coming back.

Rock! and Roll baby! Between the White, Blue, Red, Orange and Yellow trails there are around15 unique miles, up to 20 depending how you loop it. A full tour of all trails with most in both directions will yield you well over 20, closer to 22. A single pass on everything is probably more in the 13 realm. easy to climb over 1,000 ft if you hit each color trail. Not to mention the boyscout trail that follows the creek over 9-10 bridges and boardwalks through the Forest.

My home base. Never boring. Some flow, some tough climbs, some long fast descents, lots of technical sections. Find a current, detailed map and go explore. Wide variety of trails, some outstanding recent additions. Very well cared for. 10 years and hundreds of visits later, still in my top 3 in NJ.

If you like rocks this is the place for you other than that I have found many better places to ride. Six mile run is more well marked and has better flow for an enjoyable ride.

Lots of fun. Blue trail had some difficult sections. You cannot underestimate the amount of rock on the more technical trails. There were also some fun fast grassy trails that were much less difficult.

Get place to ride. Lots of small rocks that shake you up pretty good at speed. We were here on a warm November day, and so were a lot of other people.

The parking lots are on newmans lane for the blue and red trails. Rode the blue trail and understand why it's call Chimney ROCK. Would not consider it smooth.

Blue trail is so much fun. Both the interior and exterior trails are excellent. My daughter and I have done it 4 time of the 5 times we have been there.
Cross Newman's lane and hit the blue entrance and stay left. Great ride.

Great Trail. One of my favorites in NJ. Recently, some work has been done on the yellow trail that takes you down on a windy and steep decline with some switchbacks. At the bottom it is fairly rocky (even more rocky than the other places at Chimney Rock) and has some great technical riding.
