Mountain Biking Cleeve Hill

***   Add a review
#37 of 98 mountain bike trails in England
#6,658 in the world

Cleeve Hill is clad in open pasture with a few gorse bushes and lots of sheep. There are many walking tracks, a golf course and bike trails. You can ride all over the hill and even cross the golf course which meanders along the crest of the hill and down the side.

On a fine day it's nice to treadle round about on the open pasture to take in the views which are expansive. The best bike trails though are across the valley to the east. Head toward the three communication towers. In the valley below them there was an old quarry with a few humpy tracks. You won't find purpose-built mountain bike trails; just sheep tracks and four wheel drive tracks although there are a couple of short steep downhill tracks apparently created by mountain bikers. The trails aren't named or marked and most are not technical.

Cleeve Hill is a place you go to for the exercise, the wide open spaces, the peace and the views.

Getting there
Cleeve Hill is beside highway B4632 midway between Cheltenham and Winchcombe. If you ride out from Cheltenham you'll see an access gate after about five and a half miles, 9km. Probably the best access by road is at the Cleeve Hill golf course clubrooms.

There is some very pleasant riding to be had on Cleeve Hill but don't go looking for technical thrills - you won't find them apart from a couple of short sharp downhills one or two swoops that give you a little air if you go after it. It's not flat so it's great training and the views are stupendous.
