Mountain Biking Coal Pit Spur Track
#40 of 193 mountain bike trails in South Island
This is a very well made track, nicely benched with a good surface. It traverses beech forest with a nice cover of dappled light. As a mountain bike track it was very poorly designed - the gradient is all over the place and you won't find interesting technical features. But it does make for a good workout in a pleasant environment. There are two easy stream crossings and you will get wet feet.
The Coal Pit Spur track provides off-road access from Flock Hill Station to the Craigieburn Skifield Road and all the other amazing mountain bike tracks in the Craigieburn Forest.

The Coal Pit Spur Track is two way and you can access it from both ends... *** North end: Right opposite Flock Hill Station there is a large parking area. It's 111km from Christchurch and 38km from Arthurs Pass on highway 73... *** South end: It starts about a kilometre up Craigieburn Ski-field Road on the right, just before the gate and car park. There is no sign - just a marker post and a pile of gravel to stop 4 wheel drive vehicle access. The Craigieburn Ski-field Road branches off highway 73 just 107km from Christchurch and 43km from Arthurs Pass... *** From the DOC campsite on Broken River Ski-field Road there is a good access track that goes to Craigieburn Ski-field Road. That access track is called "Sidle 73" and is well signposted at both ends. It's only about 1km long.
