Cougar Crest is a rocky, technical trail that measures 2.6 miles one direction. You
can loop it with a couple of gravel roads, or ride it as an out-and-back.
Frankly, Cougar Crest is probably one of the best trails in Big Bear. The views of
the lake and the town and ski resorts across the lake are jaw dropping, and the
rocky, technical singletrack is very different from the trails on the south side of
the lake--in a good way. Where many of the trails on the south side are loose and
rocky with plenty of baby heads flying around as you blast down the trail, the
rocks on Cougar Crest are big and imbedded in the trail, providing a classic rock
garden feel that will punish your suspension--and your body, if you don't pay
attention. Towards the bottom of the trail, things open up and smooth out,
allowing you to blast down on mach 10! Just keep your eyes open for hikers.
Note: mountain bikes are not allowed on the Pacific Crest Trail (which passes the
top of the Cougar Crest Trail).
