Mountain Biking Eddye McClure Trails

****   Add a review
#96 of 265 mountain bike trails in Montana

There are two Eddye McClure Trails: Eddye McClure West and Eddye McClure East.(!!)

The best way way to ride them is out-and-back from the eastern trailhead on the corner of South Hills Road and Martinez Gulch Road. You start with a steady climb of nearly 200 verticle feet. That's followed by a nice down-sloping section with lots of switchbacks. Then you reach Arrowroot Drive where Eddye McClure East ends. You then have the option of turning back for a 5 mile out-and-back ride on Eddye McClure East or taking Eddye McClure West a further mile and 150 verticle feet to join up with the Mount Ascension Loop.

These are very pleasant shared two-way trails mostly through forest.

Getting there
There are two Eddye McClure Trails: Eddye McClure West and Eddye McClure East.(!!) They almost join in the middle and are both on the eastern side of the South Hills Trail System. The trailhead for Eddye McClure East is on the corner Martinez Gulch Road and South Hills Road. There is a small car park there. To reach it from downtown you could troll through the eastern suburbs of Helena or you could head down highway 15, turn right into Saddle Drive after then left into South Hills Drive and follow it for 30 yards to Martinez Gulch Road. There is no parking at Arrowroot Drive at the other end of the trail where it meets Eddye McClure West. Eddye McClure West is reached from other trails on Mount Ascension, from Arrowroot Drive (no parking) or from Eddye McClure East. Easy!!

These trails have an element of technicality which is unusual for two-way shared trails. The ride up to the summit of the Eddye McClure East Trail is steady and won't stretch your chain. The ride down from the summit has lots of sharp switchbacks which will keep you focused. The challenge coming back up them is to round them without dabbing! If you get round half them you're an ace. If you get round all of them you're a legend! The ride down the eastern side of the eastern trail is a blast.

I rate these trails grade 4, advanced, but they probably won't maim you if you only have intermediate skills and you take your time.
