Mountain Biking ESU Trail

****   Add a review
#23 of 90 mountain bike trails in Kansas

This trail has some nice open riding, BMX style, and technical challengs. You start off by the bouble gate. You can go one of two ways here. I like to take the trail to the right. You will follow a old road be fore entering the woods along the river. As you ride this trail you will come across a high bank turn, some jumps, sharp turns, and the gard rail bridge. The trail takes you to the other side of HWY99 to a nice leg of the trail. You will wind around and end up back at HWY99. The trail will take you back to the main side. Take the trail to the right. This part of the trail runs along HWY99 and has some Technical challenges. You will come to another single gate. Take the trail to the left. This leeds you to the center of the trail, where big slabs of concrete were dumped. You will hit some BMX style trail and wind through the concrete forest. There are some nice technical challenges along this part of the trail. Now you will head back to the woods. Along this part of the trail there are alot of technical turns, climbs, and descents. You will wind aound a bit before getting back to the second gate. Now at the second gate take the trail to the left. This will take you through the open field and back to the beginning. There is another leg just behind the ball diamond. Follow the road along the river it will lead you right to the trail. This is a nice fast short trail. The High Gear Cyclery team does a great job maintaining this trail.

Getting there
Just south of I35 on Hwy99 Is Highland St. It runs behind the collage along I35. A few hundred yards you will see a gravel parking lot to the left. Just past that you will see a tunnel that takes you under I35. Go through the tunnel and you will see to the left a big double gate and a fenced in storage aera. This is where the trail begins.

There has been an addition to ESU. Follow the gravel road east just past the pond. Look to the right for a pallet bridge crossing in the drainage ditch. After crossing the bridge go to the right to the tree line. This is where the trail begins. It's flat and somewhat fast when dry. A good addition to spread things out a bit.

Sharing the info. High Gear has turned over trail maintenance to Gravel City Bike Shop. Their located on 7th St. and Commercial on the back side of the Dirty Kanza Headquarters. Maintenance was OK on the main trail east of the Hwy 99 overpass. Everything west has been let go back to nature. Tall grass and downed trees made this a hike & bike. Some new reroutes took me by surprise but nice. Over all a good ride

very fun. session the tech loop "concrete alley," or ride laps. Although it's fairly small, I had a blast. plenty of scary bits and fun pump bumps, and rock n ruble in the side loop. Some of the back loop, past the highway, was still in need of chain saw clearing, but only one spot impassable. I'm sure that'll get cleared soon. definatly put it in the rotation. tech parts remind me of Santos.

I like this trail simply because you can just cruse it. When I got to the west side of Ks. 99 the high water from the flooding this spring has made a mess of things. A lot of dead wood laying everywhere. I couldn't even find the trail. So BEWARE!!!! The rest of the trail is in great shape as always. I had a good ride.

Fast trail along the turnpike in Emporia. Trail would be for beginners to intermediate with some technical challenges. I prefer Camp Alexander if I am going to ride in Emporia. This trail is well maintained as the folks at the bike shop in Emporia do a great job.

This trail is worth a try if you are in the area. It is well maintained. I live over an hour away and don't like it enough to make a special trip.

Been a wile since I rode this trail. There are some changes . The Diamond Trail is all doubletrack packed chat rock and the rout has changed a little. The main trail west of the bridge has expanded and some crafty jumps have been added as well. This section needed something more. There was lots of unused area that now has some fast singletrack , switchbacks , and big air jumps. Not so boring anymore.

The oldest bike/running trails in the area, High Gear the local bike shop and human power company do an awesome job of maintaining and adding to this trail system. Fun ride and close to town.

I like this trail because you get alot of terrain changes and the trail along the river is peaceful. You will also face some nice technical challenges along the way. The back part of this trail lets you realy pick up speed and enjoy your ride. Hope to see you along the way. Also this trail is .02 miles from Emporia .
