Mountain Biking Farris Creek

****   Add a review

Just incredible fun... the climb up the intial hill is hard going but it pays back in a big way. There is some superb downhill through rock gardens, serene trails through aspen stands (and look out for the bearclaw marks on the bark), flowing singletrack across open hills. It's got a bit of everything. The descent to the junction with Canal Trail is gripping but watch out for the sting in the tail...

Getting there
from Crested Butte follow the New Deli trail out to South Crested Butte, only a couple of miles; then follow the county road (Brush Creek Road) out past the trailhead to Cold Spring Ranch, about 2 miles; there is a right turn up a fairly steep hill, approx 1/2 mile beyond Cold Spring Ranch; on completing the trail you end up on this county road, follow it back to South CB and then CB itself

This is a beautiful trail with some really entertaining sections, including a unique scree field crossing.

the downhill portion this year is much more technical with the water pouring through there this spring.

Rode this trail on 7/18. It seems the public access point may have been cut off, although an entry from Brush Creek Road near a cattle gate starting on Canal Trail, will lead you to Farris Creek. You'll go uphill on Canal to pick up Farris, then you can come back down. We parked at the fork in the road for Brush Creek where the trail sign for Teocalli Ridge is, then went down to the right, crossed through the river and the trail began. Doesn't seem like too many people are riding this one much, lots of loose rocks and it's very rocky. It's decent, but there were better trails in CB.

This is a good ride in CB IF you are already tired of about 6 or 8 rides that are better. There are no great climbs or descents and I've been mauled by flies and mosquitos, probably because of all the cows in the area. One bonus though: I've seen huge herds of elk on this ride on a few different occassions.
