Mountain Biking Folkstone Park Trail

**   Add a review
#57 of 300 mountain bike trails in Virginia
#2,028 in the world

Sandwiched between Fox Mill Road and West Ox Road and bordered by Folkstone Drive to the north, this fun little loop of singletrack in Oak Hill, VA (Herndon) is hardly known. This is not an overly challenging trail, but it does have a few technical spots. In a few cases the trail comes right to the edge of a six-foot drop-off into the stream. Also, there are a few marshy places with thin wooden bridges that make for an interesting challenge.

Getting there
From West Ox Road travel east on Folkstone Drive. In about two tenths of a mile you will see a guard rail in front of the woods on the right hand side. Just at the end of the guard rail is the beginning of a trail. There is no sign for the park; just a small post with a FCPA sticker and a blue dot. From the Fox Mill Road side; go south on Fox Mill Road and turn right onto Westwood Hills Drive. On the right, there will be a small field with a sign that says Folkstone Park - Little Difficult Run Stream Valley Park. In the back left of this field the trail begins.

To start off, this place looks like almost an abandoned trail... The roads are very narrow, Thorns whack your hands and legs, and the trail is not maintained properly. As I went over a wooden obstacle, it snapped and I fell into a gigantic pile or thorns. I would not recommend this trail.

This is definitely not an upkept trail. Many fallen trees and askew bridges which made me dismount 3-4 times. Also 30-40 spiderwebs. Do not ride when wet/moist.

Get some speed and it'll make this an interesting set of trails. I think there is a lot to explore here. Be careful of some tight areas where the creek has eroded the trail, I tossed myself into the creek at one point.

The only thing this trail has going for it is that it is very narrow singletrack. Other than that, most of it is stream bottom which means it gets quite boggy. There's no climbs, descents, or technical challenges. I'ts just a sort of uninteresting little cruise through some tight suburban woods.

This trail is alright. There is little elevation change. Very minor ups and downs. It is a relatively slow trail with some tight corners and a lot of the time is spent along a creek. Narrow single track, light roots, drops into the creek, and some narrow creek crossings make the trail decent. There is a section of blue trail that comes off the yellow loop that I did not have time to explore so I will go back to check that out. The trail will be fun for multiple quick loops to refine your handling or slow, enjoy-the-ride beginner loops.

It's a very narrow trail! If you wear shorts you will get cuts from the thorn bushes that line the trail. However, it can be a fast trail. The turns are tight and at points, you are just inches from a several foot drop off into the creek, so you need to pay attention. I went on 29 Aug 07 and there was no one else on the trail. It's not a big trail and it's poorly marked, but overall, I would ride it again. Not physically demanding, but a rider has to pay attention.

I think it is a great little trail. I am just getting back on the bike after a 10 year hiatus since i got a car @ 16. Good singletrack through lush Stream valley. I will come back to this trail to help me regain my bike control. there are a couple of stream crossings with bridges that range from 1.5-2ft wide which are tough for a beginner because it is not a smooth transfer (they are not flush with the ground so having that bump up @ 4-5 inches can throw you off and maybe into the Stream). Much of the trail is right up on the streams edge where at some points the bank is 4 feet high. Fun little trail it you don't have that much time and you are in the area.* Review edited 5/14/2007* Review edited 5/14/2007* Review edited 5/14/2007

This is a nice little beginners trail. I ran it in early spring, so it was quite muddy. :D I'm sure it'd be less muddy in the summer. It had some minor technical spots....mainly steep drops adjacent to the stream. I found one stream crossing and a few roots/logs to power over. The trail is flat though, no good climbs (or descents) at all. If you're in the area, it's a nice little ride. If you're not in the area, don't go out of your way.
