Mountain Biking Girdner Trail

#147 of 417 mountain bike trails in Arizona
#4,926 in the world

This trail runs in a North/South direction into yet another area of Sedona filled with short trails. This area is known as 'Seven Canyons' and is north of Hwy 89A, West of Dry Creek rd and bordered on the north by the Wilderness area. The trails here tend to be a bit more sandy especially low in the valleys & canyons.

Riding north on the Girdner tr from the hwy the first mile is a gradual rocky drop down the ridges into a dry creek bed and canyon. This trail is not particularly technical but the sandy wash areas will have you doing short hike-a-bike's every now and then, there are also a few of the signature Sedona rocky sections. Cross the wash and follow under a power line for a while and come to an intersection with the pipeline tr, stay left here. At three miles from the start you come to an intersection with the Cockscomb/Rupp tr (a major East/West route). .6 miles of great singletrack later there is an intersection with the AZ Cyprus tr (also runs North). Shortly after that is another trail, 2 fences tr, that is a short equestrian access tr (all these intersections are well signed). Stay left for the Girdner tr as it slowly weaves its way up the ridges ending at Dry Creek rd 1 mile later.

This is a nice ride but better if used in conjunction with some of the others to create loops, lollipops or even a large figure 8.

Getting there
South end; On Hwy 89A at the west end of Sedona turn right (North) on Cultural Park place,(Red Rock Loop & the Herkenham tr is across 89A) there is a school on the left. Continue past the school and find several parking areas, the trail is signed and starts at the top of the hill on the right.
North end; In West Sedona turn North on Dry Creek rd, about 1.5 miles there will be a dirt road (# 152) on the right. Girdner trail head is directly across the road.

REDDIRT, choppy in places but a good connector to north west sedona trails.

Some sections of this trail are good, but others are sandy and washed out.

Lots of hike a bike. Several riverbed (eh, river stone) crossings. 35% fun 65% work.

Girdner ranges from wide, uninteresting hardpack, to sweet singletrack to just a bunch of loose rock. The scenery is, of course, great, but this is Sedona, and the scenery is actually better on most other trails in the area. This trail's main benefit comes from it's ability to complete loops with other, more interesting trails.

This trail offers some different scenery because it follows and crosses creek beds. Riparian vegetation and pools of water are a nice visual change from other Sedona rides. There are some hike-a-bike sections ... unless you can ride over big turtle-back river rocks.
