Guanica State Forest, hot, aired beautiful ride.
You will need to check in at the gate, the attendants are quite helpful, they will give you maps and highlight the best trails for you, and they will come looking for you if you are not back before closing time 5:00pm.
One suggested loop is LLUBERAS, CUEVA, road 333, BALLENA, 12km aprox. These are wide trails (with even a short road march) most of the trails are well marked, composed of rocky limestone ledges.
When you leave the parking lot, the first 0.5km will be a slight downhill grade until you reach the DINAMITA trail turn off. Then 2km uphill grade to GRANADOS turn off, then you have sweet downhill to the beach, look out cable stretch across trail just before you reach the beach. At the beach the 3km-road march will begin. Be careful not to miss the turn-off to BALLENA trail, there is no sign, just look green gate on your right. Then it 2km uphill grade, back to the parking lot.
You will need to carry plenty of water, extra tubes (patches), tools and ìouch kitî because bushes and terrain bite back here.
Bikes can be rented from ìThe Wheel Shopî (787) 255-0095.
Playa vieja has one air conditioned bed room with private bath for rent, interested fb inbox.
Thank |Happy trailsi
Red_Stripe couldn't have described it any better. Thats the best way to do it I guess. Went there 1 time... and thats it. No need for me to go back. Its was nice visiting the reserve and riding it, and the Ballena beach is beauutiful... but not much fun "trail-wise".
Thank |loose limestone and lots of rocks , trails are not mark. * Review edited 7/28/2012
Thank |rode the lluveras trail down to tamarindo beach then back up the ballena trail to the ranger station. i would recommend doing the opposite. the lluveras trail is all down hill and the ballena trail is a long annoying climb back up that same hill covered with loose limestone rock. not a fun way to end a ride.
Thank |This is a great network of trails that are usually well mantained. Lots of beautiful scenery if you take the Meseta trail which borders the beach/cliffs. To take this trail you have to reach Tamarindo beach. This trail borders this beach. There is also the option of doing Ballena trail which is in front of the Ballena Natural Reserve area. Ballena is aproximately 1 mile of climbing in gravel. Lluveras is twice as long and to access it you can do it at Tamarindo beach for a climb or descend it from the State Forest Guard area.
