The southern terminus is a junction with the Art Smith trail about 1-2 miles from the trailhead. The Art Smith Trailhead is located off of Highway 74 across from the Santa Rosa & San Jacinto Mountains National Monument Visitor Center. The northern terminus is off of Painters Path behind the Desert Crossing Shopping Center in town.
I started on the Hopalong Cassidy trail at its junction with the Art Smith Trail. I quickly began to run into numerous washouts and drainages cut deep into the trail tread. It seems that little maintenance has been done here recently. I lost the trail in a big wash and decided to bail out onto the road. I turned back towards the mountains down the road at the Homme/Adams Park and took the Homestead link back up to Hopalong Cassidy. Here the trail seems more heavily used and the tread more stable. I proceeded north, enjoying the twists and turns along the mountainside, finally descending to its northern terminus behind the shopping center.
