Mountain Biking Hymasa

*****   Add a review
#34 of 710 mountain bike trails in Utah
#479 in the world

Hymasa is a brand-new (as of spring 2014) two-way singletrack trail that bypasses the main Amasa Back climb in the Amasa Back Area trail system. The beauty of this route is many-faceted: not only is this a bike-only route, which will allow you to get away from all of the traffic on the main 4x4 route, but this entire climb is completely rideable on a mountain bike! Yes, there are a few techy sections to keep you on your toes, but all of the grades and obstacles are moderate enough to make for a fantastic climb that, while gaining a lot of elevation, isn't boring. The views are classic breath-taking Moab, so be sure to bring your camera!
Recommended route: up Hymasa, down Captain Ahab.

Hymasa back is the best! Great intermediate / advanced ride to challenge an intermediate rider.

We loved climbing up Hymasa and then that EPIC EPIC descend down Ahab, but this isn't a review for Ahab is it? ????.

Back to Hymasa, the climb is technical and mellow most of the time with only a few short punchy sections that are a challenge to navigate.

Magnificent advanced climbing singletrack on a planet where good climbing singletrack is extremely rare!!! Lots of do-able steps and lots of short steep pinches that you have to punch up. Hymassa constantly challenges you but allows you to overcome most of those challenges if you're a strong rider with advanced skills.

It makes for a great loop with Captain Ahab although Captain Ahab is a grade more difficult.

This is a mildly techy trail that proved to be much more fun than riding up Amasa Back. As is fairly typical for Moab, it's a combo of rock and dirt. There are a few spots on the rock where the paint has worn which makes it a bit difficult to find the trail, but that's more of an issue descending as you'd expect. Overall, this is a great trail as an out and back if you don't want to do more highly technical trails connected to this area.

As others have mentioned, it's a fairly tough climb, but manageable. The views through this area are incredible. One option is to use the connector from Hymasa to Ahab to do the funnest part of Ahab twice in probably the same time it takes to do one whole Hymasa to Ahab loop.

This was also part of my "break-in" to Moab. Loved this trail, even the climbs as I was adapting to the dirt and elevation. Staying the night in Colorado with my brother, good choice (altitude acclimation). Take this up to Captain Ahab for the best experience, you'll forget about the climbing as your going down Ahab!

Very good trail I enjoyed it just like mtbgreg said by combining it with captain Ahab but also some other ones in the area. Has good views and sweet drops and easy climbs to get you working the trail.

Pretty good trail. Nice climb to get up to a much crazier trail in Captain Ahab.

Hymasa is an absolutely fabulous singletrack climb, and when combined with Captain Ahab, it might just be my favorite pedal-driven loop ever!
