Itchy and Scratchy, or Bull Bottom, is a fun, scenic, slickrock ride in the San Rafael desert, across the Green River from Canyonlands and Moab. The ride starts out on a doubletrack, and then meets up with a vast expanse of slickrock!! At the end of the doubletrack, you can take a trail that has been cut into the cliff side, down to the Green River and Bull Bottom. There are a couple of Freemont Indian petroglyphs in Bull Bottom, if you look closely you may be able to spot them. After climbing out of Bull Bottom, head southwest on the slickrock, following the Green River. Keep following the Green until you come to Threes Canyon (you can't miss it, it's about 1,000 feet deep). Hang a right and follow Threes Canyon west until you hit a section of doubletrack. Stay left on the double track and ride about a mile until you hit the graded county road. Turn right on the graded road and head north back to the trail head. I've marked this as an eleven mile loop, but you could put countless miles on your odometer by playing on the slickrock!!
This is an awesome scenic trail that allows you to customize your ride according to your skill level. The views of the canyon separating you from June's Bottom Trail are amazing on the South Loop and on the North Loop you get the views of the Green River rim with all the desert and La Sal mountains in the background! Make sure to bring a lot of water because you are a long ways away from anything. You do get decent cell service if you use Verizon though so that is a plus. Also the road is well maintained by the county.
