Mountain Biking The Trails at Jakes Rocks

*****   Add a review
#13 of 293 mountain bike trails in Pennsylvania
#619 in the world

Jakes Rocks features world-class trail construction, which earned it Pennsylvania's "Trail of the Year" award in 2024. When you ride Jakes Rocks, it's immediately evident how well-designed and constructed the trails were. The builders began with a blank canvas, and so were able to create an artfully-crafted stacked-loop trail layout so that beginners, intermediate riders, and advanced riders alike can find something that they enjoy and have reasonable access to the goods.

In fact, the trail system is so well-built that even different types of mountain bikers will find themselves thoroughly enjoying the trails. Riders who just want to get sendy and don't want to pedal far can crank out fast laps on the Black Snake and Devil's Drop jump trails, which are located right next to the paved road for easy access. Endurance-oriented riders can pedal the longer loops, which feature a more up-and-down nature. Trails like Elijah, Longhouse, and Bent Run can be combined with others to create a lengthy ride, as well as providing access to the trail system from different aspects of the mountainside.

Awesome trail system. Something for everyone. Plenty of challenging climbs but the downs are worth it. Ursus was awesome.

Seems to be lots of new trails here. We did a 16 mile ride and didn't duplicate or even finish all the trails. Guessing there's about 20 miles. Couple of super fun long downhills (which obviously means a big climb after) or you can stay on top and do a loop without the big elevation change. Mostly machine made trails so a little wider than traditional singletrack but well made and lots of fun. Kudos to the trail builders.

This network keeps getting better. Classic IMBA style stacked loop system with super well built, hard packed shale trails. Amazing rock mosaic sections and wood-work at all water crossings. Plenty of climbing with enough grade reversals to make it pretty easy. Fun new gravity trail called "Ursula", great views over the Allegheny reservoir and massive blocks of moss covered rock to ride past and between. Riding the whole thing will be about 2 hours if you keep it moving. A couple of the downhills have sharp switchbacks and could have been designed for more flow, plenty of little jumps, some doubles to keep you interested and everything is super user friendly. Have lunch on the patio at the marina overlooking the reservoir to finish.

Phase 2 of the trail project opened up late September, an additional 10 miles of intermediate/advanced trail segments are now available in addition to the initial 10 miles of beginner-intermediate level trails. tighter more challenging segments are now included with 2 black-diamond runs as well

An incredibly well built trail system with more in the works. Fast and flowing trails with fun but not death defying features. Decent elevation change, but no super long climbs.

Initial set of trails is great. Excited about the plans to expand. Drove over an hour and a half to get to the trails and it was worth the trip.
