Mountain Biking Jasus Creek

#158 of 403 mountain bike trails in Georgia

If you park a the Game Check station, you ride north on FS 44 for one mile until you reach a closed FS road 44B. You take this road around the ridge for ten miles, to lollipop back to where you parked. Watch out on this trail because there are Bears and briers! Once on 44B there is a fairly steady but long climb, followed by a wicked fast downhill. On the downhill you will have to dodge briers and yell yo bear when, not if, you run across them!

There are miles and miles of closed FS roads you can ride in this area, and FS 44 has some pretty good primitive campsites along the entire length of the road. I recommend getting a detailed road map of the area.

Getting there
From Helen, drive one mile north on GA 75/17. Cross river and take right on FS 44 (this entrance may be closed so you may have to drive a couple more miles down the road until you reach the other entrance to FS 44) Go 2.9 miles on 44 to Game Check station. You can park pretty much anywhere on this road, the mileage for the trail starts at the Game Check station.

Some beautiful gravel roads in this area, but sadly, no legal singletrack. The climbs are challenging aerobically, but technically these are easy.... they're gravel roads, after all. This area is gorgeous, however, and I saw the smallest fawn I have ever seen while riding the trails here!

From game check station ride up FS44 for 3.9 mile to the second 44B on left. Take this loop 6 mile back to 44 then right 1.9 mile back to car. You'll have a good 1 mile climb when you first get on 44B but then lots of fast downhill riding the loop in this direction. Briers, rocks & bear sh*t are obsticales to watch for, plus wet areas if there has been rain in the last few days. Fun ride and workout.

Road this trail for the first time and was very glad that I ran into another rider who gave me some great tips and directions on which way to ride the trail. Trail was in pretty good shape. Not to many briers on my ride.
Also, watch out for vehicles on FS44.

Nice steady climbs up forest road to double track loop. Nothing technical here, though I did find a lot of mud today. Great views in fall / winter, good training ride - though sadly, no singletrack. Keep riding past the game check station after your ride to the town of Helen (less than 4 miles) for a beer and a burger. No weed or briars in December.* Review edited 12/13/2008

Good double track. Fair views in the Summer months. Would be awsome views in the Fall and Winter months. In the warmer months the South end of the trail is very overgrown with weeds and briars and must be taken slowly.
