Mountain Biking LaFrambois Island
#21 of 44 mountain bike trails in South Dakota
This island has more trees than anyplace else in the area. The trails here are a series of singletracks that cut narrow swaths thru the dense forest. The climbing is non existant, biggest climb is about 8 foot. What this trail has to offer is a slice of singletrack solitude in the heart of central South Dakota.Quiet secluded beaches practicly downtown. The terrain is packed sand to sandy soil. The trail swallows water like a drunk hooker at a sailor convention, you can ride in the wettest of weather here.I ride here every chance I get and I love the place.I suggest it to anyone needing to stretch your legs or get that "bike fix" in when you pass thru Pierre.

From downtown Pierre, the trailhead is only minutes away.take the main road 83,14 to the last traffic light before the bridge.Turn left towards the river, follow the road as it turns into a cozway leading to the island. The road ends and becomes a parking lot.The trailhead is just across the fence towards the outdoor toilets.
Rode on tandem bike a day earlier and had a great time! Just a little bit challenging on some area where it has sharp curve trail.
Thank |A few people on trail to begin, then clear sailing. A bit technical at times through the trees. Very enjoyable.
Thank |When I lived in Pierre a couple of years ago this was pretty much the only place to ride. A forest oasis in the middle of the prairie. No climbs or obstacle to really speak of besides a few roots and some patches of sand. The single track does have a nice flow and is a good way to get out and stretch your legs in an otherwise mtb trail desert. There are a couple of options for loops with singletrack and some double. Overall a really nice trail considering the area.
Thank |Nice easy ride, great for beginners.
Thank |Not much here either in the way of mileage or variety, but its worth a stop if you're in the area for a nice easy spin close to town.
Thank |It's a quite scenery ride which you could run by some deer or some wildlife animals and nice river view when ride by edge of island. It's beginner level with little grade. I rode there quite a lot and sometime I experienced something mysterious at the island which add to fun list about LaFramboise!
