Mountain Biking Lake Moraine Trail
#819 of 1,392 mountain bike trails in Colorado
Wow, great new trail that opened on August 31, 2018 that connects Jones Park Trail to the Barr Trail on the east slopes of Pikes Peak. This trail has been 20 years in the making. Finally, you can now pedal from Frosty Park on FR 379 across Forester's Cutoff Trail to Jones Park to the Barr Trail and banzai down to Manitou. Or you can start just off of PP Highway on the Elk Park trail and work your way south and east all the way down to the Ridgeway Trailhead in Stratton or the La Veta Trailhead. AWESOME. It makes the east side of Pikes Peak much more adventuresome. It is a well-constructed singletrack trail with bikers in mind and has an upper elevation of 10,310' and a lower of 9630'. If you do the ride from Elk Park down to the Ridgeway Trailhead in Stratton, you are descending from 11,835' to 6245'. NICE. The actual amount of descending is 6750' and ascending is 1170'.

Have fun getting there. You can pick up the northern trailhead off of Mountain View Trail about a quarter mile in (south) from the Barr Trail. Mountain View Trail starts about a 1/2 mile below Elk Park Trail. Or you can start on the southern trailhead which begins off of the Jones Park Trail about 0.2 mi from the top.
Really nice trail running north and south connecting the Barr Trail and Jones Downhill above the Forester Cutoff Trail. The trail was clearly built for bikes in mind. Running south to north, the trail starts with a sweet two mile downhill that has a little gnar (one nice rock garden) and several bermed curves. This trail is remote and makes for a great adventure solo ride when it's hooked up with Elk Park, Barr and Jones Downhill. If you want a more flowy fun ride, start at Frosty Park, scoot across Forester Cutoff, ride up Jones Downhill for about a mile, connect with Lake Moraine trail, do the two mile downhill, turn around, ride back up the two miles and then exit for 13 miles down Jones, Jacks and the Chutes. This is of course a shuttle ride with a long shuttle up to Frosty Park, but it's a pretty shuttle. Alone, I rate Lake Moraine Trail as 4 stars, but connected with the other trails necessary to get to it, the rides are definitely 5 star rides.
