Mountain Biking Tannehill Historic Ironworks State Park

*****   Add a review
#10 of 112 mountain bike trails in Alabama
#957 in the world

Double track and some new single Track put in by BUMP. The best route is to ride counter clockwise. There is a quick loop of single track in the beginning before the big mail loop of double tack. Near the end of the mail loop there is an out and back.
There is a lot more double track out here that can be ridden but the GPS follows the popular loop everyone rides.

Props to BUMP for keeping these trails in great shape. It was damp, but not muddy. Trails were running great. The Dam Loop is crazy fun, tight and technical. Great flow everywhere else. Tons of signs, just wish the signs had the trail names on them.

Really fun trail. Few short, punchy, climbs. Tons of flow. Very well maintained trails. It rained hard while I was riding and the trails held up very well. Thanks to the BUMP crew for all they do out there.

Fantastic trail system. Not too many climbs. Lots of buff and flow systems. Fast and fun. Trails stay dry, even after rain. Thanks, BUMP, for a great trail system. It's especially great that I can camp here and hit the trails right outside my door.

A system of fast, flowing, fun well built trails. Took me a while to find the trails even with a map but then had a lovely ride. Nothing technical to speak of but very enjoyable. The Ironworks are an additonal treat. A great weekend would be to camp at Oak Mountain State Park, (which boast the #1 rated trail on this site) and ride both systems. Alabama has plenty to offer.

This is an extremely underrated trail. The single track was fast and fun ... Had packed dirt, with few roots and rocks. The dual track is super fast! Felt like the forestry trails in Arkansas. Loved this trail, I can't wait to ride it again.

Excellent trail system. Very much the same 'feel' as oak Mountain with less elevation change. Most trails are very flowy with mild elevation changes so you can spin up the climbs at a good rate and the downhills go on for a long time. Most trails work equally well in both directions with the exception of the Pink trail. That one should be ridden East to West from the Iron Works Loop trail up to the red trail intersection, make a 180 and continue on the pink to the end.
While most trails are pretty easy, approach the Furnace trail with caution. It has a good amount of technical rock features that need to be navigated in both up and down directions.
Overall, the trail layout is a little confusing without a map but once you learn the basics you can put together a ride in a variety of ways to suit your preferences. The park itself is busy with campers and other non-bike folks just there to see the old iron works but I only came across about 10 people on the trails.
I will definitely be going back next time I'm in the Birmingham area.

Fun, fast and flowy. Once you figure trail map out, which is not to difficult this is a fun ride. I found a few technical areas, but they weren't bad. I was able to get in roughly 12 miles each time I rode. Looks to me that more trails are being added. This is a fast fun ride were for the most part you don't worry about anything in your way on trail. Just ride. Climbing is not bad, the initial climb is the worst but very doable. I am a east coast of Florida rider so this was completely different from what I am accustomed to. I did ride Oak Mountain also, but I enjoyed this trail as much as Oak Mountain.

Great trails! They would be 5 star but I spent a lot of time trying to figure out the way I should go. The trail markers that are there are very nice. Hopefully more are in the works for some of those junctions. Get a map at the gate if you're new to these trails. They seem like they'd be easy to learn. I think my favorite was Blue and Green trails, but Pink IMBA trail was fun too. All fast and flowy...everything but the steepest climbs felt like they had their own gravitational pull. Awesome!

Cannonball was a total rush. Whooped out loud. The only problem we had was staying lost. The trails did not match the map.

Great trail for beginner to intermediate riders, also for more advanced riders that want to "Big Chainring" a fast flowy trail. The Furnace trail is more challenging and technical but kinda short, it doesn't connect directly to the rest of the system but is across the parking lot.
My favorite is a new trail that was hand built by some locals called "No-Flow". It reminds me of our "Old School" singletrack from 20 years ago in Virginia, low speed, extremely tight, with quick steep punchy climbs....it's a hoot.

I would suggest the Furnace Quarry trail if you are wanting something a little more technical. It is not located with the other trails, it is off to itself. Lots of rocks, lots of roots, lots of skimming ledges to ride. Fun trail, demanding, and even harder CC.

The next time you ride, ask for a trail map at the front gate, or at the main office. Should help a lot.

Just a note to people that need more of a challenge and are losing their way.

Free Trail Maps are available at the front gate. Look for the dark yellow "Furnace Quarry" trail. Extremely technical, LOTS of rocks and trees. If riding it forward seems to easy, ride it CC.

Cannonball is my favorite trail there. You can build so much speed, and the turns and bends are fantastic!
