Mountain Biking Lions Loop

****   Add a review
#308 of 1,392 mountain bike trails in Colorado
#2,928 in the world

Ride SE on the frontage road for about 1.0 miles until you see a jeep road marked Lions loop (you can park here too). Climb over ridge and pass Mack Ridge on the right and Moore Fun on the left (1.1 miles). follow jeep road staying right until you see Lions Loop singetrack. There is 2.1 miles of singletrack that will put you out on doubletrack that make the remaining part of the loop. Great connector trail to other area trails. Scenic along the singletrack that parallels the Colorado River.

Great trail. It has some good climbs and descents. Nothing terribly difficult. Good tough ride for intermediate riders. Don't just ride the dirt road back. Link it with as much singletrack as possible. They are all great here!

Lions Loop is a great trail, fun way to tack on some extra miles off Mary's. Singletrack with a couple techie spots, with the trail being pretty quick. If you ride from Mary's area, no need to ride up the doubletrack once you get to it towards the end of Lions, nothing much to see there.

That there are only two previous reviews (one by the same rider) of this and Mary's/Horsethief has dozens should tell you something: Almost NOBODY rides this beautiful little trail. Great out-and-back from the end of Mary's if time is short, or the necessary connector of Mary's - Troy's for the Grand Loop, it's an awesome, underrated and oft-empty piece of dessert bliss. DO NOT ride the "loop" by climbing or descending the north ridge road (there's no reason for such an agonizing waste of time). Loop back on Mack's Ridge or continue the excellence on Troy's (or the reverse of either). I've ridden with a full parking lot in perfect weather with Mary's, H-thief and Rustlers stuffed and never seen a crowd on Lion's/Troy's. The people you do meet tend to be just as happy as you are to be there.

I think this is a fun ride. If you choose to ride up the long grueling fireroad you will be rewarded with great views and a for sure descent to the singletrack side of the ride. Yeah, the flow of this ride doesn't compare to others in the area however, it does offer a great cross-country ride. Lion's singletrack is more challenging than some of the easier loops in the Kokopelli Trail system and is a must do for the scenery alone.

By itself, this is not one of the better trails in the Loma area. One side is a boring, painful climb straight up the ridge on a super wide swath that looks like it was cut by a bulldozer. The singletrack on the other side is better, but still doesn't have the flow oor the atmosphere of other rides in the area. The singletrack portion does make a nice loop with either Mack Ridge or Troy Built.
