Mountain Biking Loon Lake Trail

*****   Add a review
#7 of 319 mountain bike trails in Idaho
#841 in the world

This is a classic McCall area ride. You can loop it clockwise or counter - either way is fun, especially when linked with the Secesh Trail for a loop. You can hike around Loon Lake and view a crashed-WWII era plane. There are junctions with other trails (e.g., Ruby Meadows) that can be used to make longer loops or out-and-backs. A great area to explore.

As always this trail is a great ride. It's not super long or technical but I love it anyways. As of late summer it's getting a heavy moon dust layer in some areas. Being open to motorcycles is probably why. They tend to cause it more than mountain bikes or hikers. Not trying to be negative about the motorcycles, I've ridden mine on these trails and it's great. Also the few riders I've encountered have been polite and friendly.
One more thing worth mentioning is ability to contact help in case if an emergency. The fire station in Secesh has added an emergency phone out front. This is on Warren Wagon Road just a few miles back from the trail head. I hope you never need it, but its a whole lot closer than driving all the way back to Secesh Summit for cell service.

Excellent trail with an marvelous destination. Best done as a loop with Secesh River. If done clockwise, the connector from Secesh to Loon is a vicious climb, but the loop starts with a beautiful downhill along the Secesh River and finishes with a mad bomber descent back to the start. Most of the trail is superb and the scenery is fantastic throughout. The only thing that keeps it from five stars is the frequent sand which occasionally appears when bombing the fast parts.

Fantastic ride through some beautiful country. There are multiple routes and starting points depending on how far you want to ride. I believe the most popular route to begin at Chinook Campground and go either down the river or across the river and over the hill. Either route gets you to the same place. With the exception of a climb or two there is nothing technical about this ride. It's rolling hills and well maintained single track. The river trail section does get a bit narrow and has some nasty drop offs. Just be careful along the edges. Once you get to Loon Lake take some time to soak in the beauty. As you look across the crystal clear water you see North and South Loon Mountains looming in the distance. Find a rock or a place on the beach and sit down for lunch. If you feel like taking a short hIke there is a B23 Dragon Bomber crashed on the far end of the lake. It's a little overy a mile to hike around the lake to it. The popular route is along the north side of the lake. Take lots of pictures and enjoy your ride. This place is amazing.
Just some information about the area. You will not get cell service along any part of this ride. You are fairly remote and in the event of an emergency you will need to drive back to Sesesh Summit on Warren Wagon Road to get any kind of cell service. I hope you don't need it, but that's the closest service I could find. Ride safe and have fun!

Must do ride. Best to start at Ruby Meadows and end at Campgrounds- shuttle or ride back to Ruby Meadows.

IMBA epic trail! why no love? Its an epic because of the scenery and the trail, not the overall length. Ride from Ruby Meadows if you want 20 miles. Typically ride downstream from Chinook CG first, then have a short but steep climb up to Loon Lake, then a gradual climb and fun descent back to Chinook CG.
