A fat tire bike parked on a dirt path surrounded by sparse, low shrubs and a mountainous landscape in the background at dusk. The scene conveys a sense of adventure and tranquility in nature. Luke

Mountain Biking Luke's Trail

****   Add a review
#51 of 710 mountain bike trails in Utah
#989 in the world

The Luke's Trailhead is on the west side of the parking lot. Lukes Trail is the main starting point, but there are over 10 individually named trail segments in this network. Some are more user friendly than others. Trails range from buff cruising to full-on gnar. There are rock stunts adjacent to almost all trail segments. There are no truly extended climbs, but there is plenty of climbing overall. A map and a local are helpful.

Great for high desert type riding. The conditions were extremely dry, as would be expected this time of year. Great maze of trails up on the plateau, and very fun to explore.

Approaching the trailhead inspired little confidence. The trail looked like little more than a game trail heading into the sagebrush and on to miles more of expansive scrub. Once riding I found the experience to be very different. The builders have made the somewhat flat sagebrush sections to be challenging with fast turns and more variation in elevation than I thought was possible. The trail through the Junipers had me effectively lost and turned around, but enjoying it nonetheless. Certain sections had somewhat challenging rock features, some pallet features, and other novelties to mix up the experience. I was overall very happy that I took the time to ride the trail and enjoyed it much more than I thought that I would.

    Reviewing Luke’s Trail:

One of the worst flow-killing trails I've ever ridden. A definite must NOT do.

    Reviewing Smo Joe’s:

Three intermediate trails called Therapy and Smojoe's and Knot Pete's Rim form one contiguous trail that is the usual way back to the car park. They are fun, slightly down-sloping and scenic. They go along the rim of the mesa.

IMBAtween extends Luke's Trail - it's advanced so I guess it had to have a separate name. It links to trails that either take you back to the car park or further along the mesa.

It looks like John took a photo of every rock obstacle on Luke's Trail! It's an easy cross-country trail for a rider with intermediate skills and the trail surface is generally quite smooth.

There's about 24 miles of singletrack in the Wood Hill Trails (Luke's Trails), mostly intermediate but about 6 miles will extend advanced and expert riders. They meander around the juniper trees on mesas above the town of Price. They are not flat but the altitude change on all the trails is less than 300 feet. They are not technically rich (the photos give the wrong impression!) but they are always interesting with curves, varied terrain, and views overlooking the rims of the mesas.

    Reviewing Alan’s Alley:
    ****

Alan's Alley is a 1.2 mile long detour off Luke's Trail. It mainly follows the rim of the mesa for some stunning views. It's a little more challenging than Luke's but non-threatening. The bowling ball in John's photo and trail description is no longer there! If you miss the first turnoff don't worry, there is a little sign at the second which is about 500 yards further along.

Extensive single track. Can spend a lot of time here without crossing your own tracks. Worth getting here and exploring!

    Reviewing Yoo Hoo:

5 stars for upper Yoo Hoo--two for the wash. The top portion is mostly big-hit bike territory, but the mile of sandy wash to get out is hardly worth it. If you want the biggest technical challenge at Luke's and are willing to do a little pushing in the sand thereafter, then hit this one.

This is more great rim riding on the mesa at Luke's. Definitely hit this one as part of your Luke's loop.

Fun, fast, flowy rim edge riding in and out of the junipers. This is a perfect finish to a big Luke's loop.

This is a perfect east-side-of-the-mesa route for a classic Luke's loop. There's great swoopy cruising with a few fun obstacles along the way.

    Reviewing Shamrock and Roll:
    *****

I thought this was the highlight of all the trails on Luke's. There are switchbacks, rocks, drops, tight banks through the junipers, and great views. Like lollipop, the obstacles aren't always flowy, but they are usually entertaining.

    Reviewing Mead’s Rim:

The northern portion of Mead's is a blast with some great rock step ups to practice your wheelies on. Don't follow it all the way south unless you want to climb back up the fire road to the parking lot.

Fun intermediate flowy trail with plenty of rock stunts adjacent to the trail to keep more advanced riders entertained. This is a great way to start a day on the mesa and should make most riders happy.

    Reviewing Lollipop:

Lollipop starts to amp thing up a bit. It isn't always user friendly, but it's never awkward and the minor challenges add a little spice to a Luke's ride.

Superb, flowy rim riding on sweet singletrack. This makes an excellent finish to a big outer loop on Luke's.

Although really just a connector, this is a very entertaining section of trail. Doing a big figure 8 on Luke's will allow you to hit this one twice, which is just fine.

The name is pretty apt. There are lots of rocks to cruise across here. The trail is plenty fun and a great part of a Luke's day.
