Mountain Biking McAllister Park

****   Add a review
#15 of 279 mountain bike trails in Texas
#650 in the world

The trails vary from rocky to...well rocky. The trails are very fast but we share most of them with joggers. The upper loop is very fast and has some cool views of the airport. There are bathroom facilities available and several pavilions for BBQs and the like. On Saturdays there are a multitude of activities out here from soccer games to running events. the local bike clubs have races out here every year as well. The fee is FREE and the park is a good place to bring young or inexperienced riders. There are some pretty good hills to try their legs out on as well as some VERY rocky areas to try their suspensions out on as well (THE ROCK GARDEN). Overall this is a pretty good ride for a quick 10 miler!

Ride this morning. Super muddy and slick. Was able to put in about 2 miles before I had to stop and clear the mud binding up the wheel and brakes.

I am giving Mac a good review because it's a local mountain biking Mecca and it's where many club rides take place, group rides and many beginners get their start and many advanced riders continue to sharpen their skills. It is great for cross country and enduro riding but nothing really there for downhill. Can be crowded on weekends and evening but that can be attributed to it's popularity, ever growing trail markers, dirt jump features that keep growing and general proximity.

Great for beginners and family riding. Terrible for thrill seekers wanting technical challenges....

The trails themselves are VERY nice and well maintained but the lack of clear marking made this a very frustrating trail system for my daughter, wife and I. I'm spoiled living in the Dallas area to the DORBA trail markings which rarely leave any doubt about which trail you are on and which way you're supposed to be headed biker or hiker. This trail system has everything you could want including some decent climbs if you can find it. I only found the good stuff by doing a race where all the normally unmarked spur trails were blocked off.

Needs more markings. I'm in town visiting and I could barely orient myself around the trails. One second you start on the blue trail, next second your doing the mud loop. Or, you hit a rogue trail and end up clockwise. -.- Very hard to know what's up if you're not familiar with the lay of the land. Obviously, I'm writing this on ST so I studied the trail map before jumping on. I also pulled it up on MTB project to follow myself on the map--still, too many unmarked trails.
However, the trails I did hit were awesome. Rock garden on the mud loop is pretty cool.

As most riders have stated this trail is not very technical. You can work on conering and endurance on this trail. The trail markings are very spread out and random. I was on the red trail and ended up on the yellow. Watch out for deer. They are everywhere. I saw a lady with 300 pounds of feed in the back of her truck throwing it our for the deer to eat. Avoid this trail after heavy rain. The mud will just accumulate until your wheel stops spinning .

Fast. Not too technical. Route finding slightly difficult at times. Overall fun ride minutes from the Alamo??'?

The parts we found were fun. However, not much signage and tried to get lost and have fun, but because we didn't know the trails we kept circling back on ourselves. Suggest finding a local to give you a tour as we ended up leaving frustrated. Again WHT we road was fun.

Just moved to San Antonio and this is the first Singletrack I rode. Great layout, nice park and easy to get to from anywhere in San Antonio. Had a great ride.

There is a lot of construction going on currently and the single tracks are poorly marked (ie: Blue Loop). After reading the other reviews, I was surprised that the $2k bikers had no clue where the blue loop even was. As such, I've been slowly piecing it together to form an "almost 6 mile" run. There are places where the single track is so eroded it's been turned into a triple track with a high line on either side. There are several trails crisscrossing each other as well. Overall, not too difficult a climb on my single speed and only a few technical sections where it goes from rocky to "is this a trail?"

This is a flat and easy singletrack trail were you can maintain high speed and get some nice fast and flowy riding. Be aware of joggers, hikers, and bikers going the wrong direction (blue trail marking)!

Good variety of ups & downs, although most are rather low. Lots of flat terrain, which is good for high speed. Rocks... Not everywhere, but when you hit a stretch with them, it's pretty concentrated. Nicely wooded. Several options of single-track paths. In the summer time, the humidity is trapped in by the thick canopy - some water up!

There is some great single track riding in McAllister Park and can be fast at times. Many different types of trail as well.

I have ridden McAllister more than 50 times and always have fun. The best thing about this place is the rocky technical terrain mixed with smooth/fast flowing sections. There are not too many long climbs, but there are numerous that are short and steep. Once you get the blue and red trails dialed in start taking other rouge trails. You might get lost for a while, but you will always find your way. If you want to do something different go for a night ride. The park stays open until 1100pm and if you know your way around it's a lot of fun.

Something for everyone out here, kids too. Right now lost of Oak leaves making for slippery track in some places.

Easy trail that the whole family can enjoy. Took my 9 y/o girl out for a couple hours and had a blast between the paved and natural trail areas.

When I moved to San Antonio over three years ago this is one one of the first trails I rode. Its not amazing, but I credit it with really getting me to that next level of skills, where I began to seek out more challenging trails. There's a little bit of everything here: really fat rooty sections, rock gardens, loose rock, hard packed dirt, etc. Its great to ride after work if you need to get in a quick 45 minute ride, just hit the blue and red loops. But if you want to get lost on a Saturday, there's so many different offshoot trails and ways to get turned around (yet never get too far away from where you parked) that you can easily put in 15-20 miles in a couple hours. A lot of locals curse this place because its teeming with beginners, but I think its a gem to have right in the middle of the city. That said, and given perfect circumstances I'd rather ride Flat Rock Ranch, Salado Creek or Government Canyon but on those weekends where you just don't want to drive so far to hit some trails, McAllister rarely disappoints.

I have only ridden this park about 5-7 times. I do enjoy it and I like the smooth lines. i mostly ride the greenway in Hardberger Park, its only a half miles bike ride from my apt. The rocky technical trails to 1604 are fun, but it makes you appreciate the smooth singletrack at McAllister. The only problem I am having at McAllister is i find myself ending up at the same spot near the dirt jumps, and all around that area. I normally start at the Mud loop trailhead and after that ride i cross the pavement by the playground and end up at the dirt jump area. Does anyone have any tips for me on where to go after Mud Loop? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Since my last review I have some side trails in this park that makes me strath my head. First flying over the dog park damn going into the bluff drop off which sends you into the fly zone. Right across from the softball fields/ soccer fields. A lot of warm up fun. On the northern side are a lot boring trials until you fly over the yellow root (you don't see yellow until u turn around)

In summary u have to ride the trails at Mcallister to find your happy medium, for me is some technical upfront, 9 miles of up/down and slyly hit some 3-6 feet jumps. I can't map it out here cause it's all over the place.
