Mountain Biking McLovin

#67 of 322 mountain bike trails in Michigan

This trail is the Midwestern equivalent of Dupont State Forest's Big Rock Trail. Don't let the steep, technical, and short up and downhills frustrate you in the beginning; soon the trail will open up to expansive views of Lake Superior. Next comes some of the greatest rock rolls you'll ever do. They are very smooth, meaning you can get a scary amount of speed going pretty easily. They very in length and pitch, but one thing unites them; they are amazingly fun. After the slickrock section, riders are thrown into a massive, sprawling rock garden that looks really intimidating but is completely doable. Just watch out for the webs of roots that lace the rocks. The last portion is amazing, tacky hero dirt at a gentle grade. You'll be smiling wide as you carve turns and clear rock gardens with infinite traction in a scene transplanted from the Pacific Northwest. Enjoy!

Getting there
From the parking lot of the Harlow Lake trails, head down the doubletrack that penetrates the woods at the main road. Eventually, you will reach the singletrack trail called Bareback. Follow it up to the top of the mountain; McLovin will go off to the right at the top.

This might be my favorite trail of all time. The rock rolls are so fun and allow you to really push the limits. The rock gardens are scary but doable, so you feel like a rock (get it) star after completing them. Lastly, the lower section's traction and flow is unparalleled. This is the run I do in my dreams!
