Mountain Biking McMurtry Trail
#6 of 64 mountain bike trails in Oklahoma
Awesome singletrack loops in Central Oklahoma. Four loops total, @ 6-7 miles each, 27 miles total. Well-marked trails, good trail map available at Ranger Office at Park entrances on both sides. Lots of shade, very few other bikers, take lots of bug spray and water. Short climbs, switchbacks in a forested and/or prairie environment! You can ride most of the trails fast, but there are some rock outcrops, rooted climbs, sometimes sandy corners, and a few washouts. Aerobic difficulty will depend on how many miles you ride; About 5 for one loop only. Trails are usually well maintained, but can be overgrown in the summer. Cooper's Bike shop on Main Street in Stillwater will have most of what you might need.

There are two trails on each side of McMurtry Lake. For the EAST side (the most popular side), Go 6 mile north of Stillwater on US HWY 177, and then 6 more west on Burris Road (you'll see a sign for Lake McMurtry). You'll run straight into the East Rec. Area. The SE trail starts to the east of the parking area, by the lake and pavillion. The NE trail starts north of the ranger station. Look a little bit, you'll find both cuz the road is a loop.
For the WEST side, take OK HWY 51 west from Stillwater, OK, for about 3 miles, go north on Redland Road. Take a left (west) on Airport Road and you'll shortly see signs for the West Rec. Area. Take a right (north) and follow the roads to the ranger station. Both trailheads are across the road (you already passed them) from the ranger station.

Plenty of mileage out here. I started on orange. It's a long boring trail for the most part. I recommend starting on red or blue. They are more engaging. Green is purposed to connect the east and west side trails, not too fun but I like that you don't have to drive to the other side of the lake. I did not get to ride yellow this time around, but I plan to come back.
Thank |Love these trails. Sections through the woods that are a moderate ride, mostly ease but with enough semi-technical stuff to keep it interesting but not so much I feel like I'm just trying to survive my ride. I start at the red trail, head over the dam and connect with a tough (but short) gravel climb, which connects to more forest trails. Then double back over the dam and rejoin red trail. Awesome ride!
Thank |ride at LCB now
Thank |not in TDD series - loosing some of its following
Thank |fun at SE loop today- with the punchy climbs and more root exposure - great skill building
Thank |over grown and not much feedback - it seems that LCB is getting the love and its a fun trail just need to get bigger
Thank |Not too wet, but a lot of tree branches and even trees down in spots, some you need to ride around. Otherwise great trails and another cooling plunge in the lake afterward.
Thank |Had a great ride today on our tandem mtb. These trails are perfect for it.
Thank |Everything was mowed. Didn't see much poison ivy except back into the trees, but none on the trail.
Meadow sections were warm, but you have to expect that, riding in July. Nice to cool off in the water at the swim area, by the Red trail.
The Blue Trail is a nice, fun trail that allows for some speed in spots. Mostly hard pan, some rocks and roots. Very little sand to deal with. Tight trail with enough sharp turns and descents to keep you on your toes. My 8 year old son only had to walk his bike on a few inclines. Of the two trails on the west side of Lake McMurtry, the Blue is not as tough as the Orange
Thank |They have really improved the Orange Trail on the NW corner of McMurtry Park. It has some nice technical stuff at the start, but not too hard (intermediate) and really nice flowy runs in the middle. Great ride!
Thank |Rode on the SE side. Red trail was great, flowing singletrack that made for a nice quick loop. Yellow trail was more of the same with several rocky drops and climbs thrown in for challenge. Great place to get an hour or two of riding in. Hope to do the other side of the lake if I'm ever back in the area.
Thank |Had a great time on the RED Trail today. Tons of good fast single track, some drops, roots, a few punchy climbs.. Was awesome to be in a new place and could have spent hours out there!
Next time I plan to ride the extension and the rest of the lake's trails. Nice job making this a great trail.
Thank |Great Trail system. Has a really nice camping area to go along with the trails. Close to town. Trails offer riders of all experience levels a chance to enjoy. Mostly shaded and wooded, some open areas and small obstacles (rocks/roots) scattered throughout the trail. There are a few sandy areas on tight turns but I have found that to be normal on lake trails. This trail has a good flow, offers opportunity for fast riding on relative smooth single track. It reminded me of some of the Tennessee trails I first started on.
Thank |Rode the blue trail early this morning and it wasn't overly difficult in the technical sense. A large rainstorm a couple weeks ago apparently dropped several branches and trees all across the trail and had not been cleaned up (my husband and I stopped to move them all), and after the rainy spring there was some serious over growth all throughout. Couldn't see the trail in many sections. The overgrowth also cause a big chigger problem so our one hour drive home will be a nightmare! Overall, with some maintenance work it would have been fairly enjoyable, but until the chigger problem is taken care of we won't plan on coming back!
Thank |The addition of the green trail connecting the west side blue trail to the east side red trail makes this already great trail system even better. Well worth the trip from Wichita!
Thank |Lake McMurtry now has 5 trails. the newly added Green trail connects the East side to the West side and goes between Red and Blue. its a very nice addition!
Thank |in the last week, traveling by on my way to and from Texas, I rode the orange trail twice and the blue trail once. Lots of flow. The first trip was after a rain, but the trail had absorbed the train nicely, The blue is a little the easier, but there is nothing too daunting on the orange. I did have to walk over a couple of the rock sections on the way up on the orange trail - always easier going down for me! Saw deer and a gray fox or a coyote.
I am an experienced camper, used to traveling alone at times, but I wish the campground, being so quiet and remote during the week, had more security - a campground host or resident ranger or something. Too many random drive throughs and cars just parking in an empty camp site and sitting with no one getting out. I won't camp there again alone.
Thank |4 trails, something for everybody and every skill level. Trails are well maintained by volunteers.
Thank |Got a bike like a week ago and road out here, it was great difficult enough where it will be enjoyable by experts but easy enough where beginners like me can still do it. Provides some good views of the lake too. I road the trail right by the entrance in front of the store or whatever. Can't wait to ride more trails out here.
Thank |Rode the south east trail. The trail was dry and dusty (not much rain lately). It is always fun. Just enough challenges to keep it interesting for the intermediate rider.
