Mountain Biking Midland Hills Trails

****   Add a review
#38 of 1,392 mountain bike trails in Colorado
#215 in the world

The Midland Hills Trails are a few relatively new singletrack trails located near the Collegiate Peaks overlook. They run up to the old railroad grade/Midland Trail, but based on the kiosks I checked out, these few trails seem to be labeled as their own entity.
Setup as a loop with a spur (or a lariat, depending on where you start), these trails all pretty mellow for the most part, but they do have plenty of rocks and swoopy turns to keep things interesting!
Depending on how you access the trails, a great route is to descend Django, head back up towards fistful of Dollars, drop down and do an out-and-back to the KOA on the A Few Dollars More trail, and then finish climbing back to the top on Fistful of Dollars.

    Reviewing Unchained:
    *****

Unchained is a really good technical singletrack that the BV MTB'ers have done a great job building and keeping up. The decomposed granite surface that make up the tread and the massive boulders provide the technical lines that make this and Django really nice. Go arounds are built in for most difficult features which are nice if you are tired. Mistakes on a dbl black section could be painful. Don't go off trail 1) the flowers and small cacti look delicate and 2) the small cacti will drain your tires of all stans, orange seal, homemade glitter goo or whatever your tubeless of the day juice is. Rock on !

    Reviewing Trail #1450.A:

This route has now been replaced by 'Bacon Bits', a new singletrack section that connects at the junction of Midland and 1450A and runs over to connect to 376A.

The Gentleman's Loop has been changed. New singletrack added to by-pass the rutted/eroded 1450A trail and a good chunk of 376A. The riding is nice and flowy with some advanced rock features planned for the near future.

Road down this trail yesterday-my first time. There are some good obstacles most of which seem to be before or after turns. There are some narrow (between rocks), riots, small rocky areas, and some large boulders. Very fun...can't wait to do again.

This trail is fun in both direction. The grade for climbing is pretty mellow (if your acclimated) and the obstacles mostly doable. Very well built trail.

The first time I rode this trail was up. I did not like it so much going up. Just rode it down and it was a very fun ride. It would have been even better had my fork not gone flat. Combine this with Fistful of Dollars and the Gentelmen's Loop for a really nice ride.

This trail rounds out the Midland Hills loop nicely. The grade is kept fairly mellow, but it's steep enough to rack up some speed if descending or get your heart rate up if climbing.

This is definitely worth adding on to your Midland Hills loops! The techy obstacles, while still intermediate level, seem to come more rapidly. Coming back up is a steady climb, but the obstacles keep it entertaining and the grade is manageable.

Super fun and flowy, especially on the downhill. Rolling from obstacle to obstacle is a real hoot. Nothing extreme, but just enough to make sure you keep on your toes. A very enjoyable ride!

This is a very entertaining intermediate trail system. It could use a few more miles, but what is here is top notch. The flow is nice and while it may be a bit much for a newb and won't challenge an expert, it should put a smile on most faces.

This trail is easy cruising on an old RR grade. The views make up for the lack of technical/physical requirements

This trail system is like Arkansas Hills Lite. The hills aren't as steep here as they are right out of Salida, the rocks aren't as gnarly, and there isn't as many miles of trails. However, the ecosystem is essentially the same as that of the Arkansas Hills, just located a bit further up river. So, the views are similar, the trees and vegetation are similar, the sandy soil and rocks are even similar. If only this trail system had more mileage, it would be well-worth a regular drive up from Salida to shred!

Note: these trails can be combined with the Whipple trail system via the Midland trail.

The swoops and rocks on this trail are super fun! While the rockiness is quite entertaining, it's all so rideable that I'm still giving it an intermediate rating.

Fun ride both directions. If you're doing a loop, it's well-worth dropping down this trail and then turning around and climbing right back up.

I don't know if this is just the road or any of the single track, I would say there is some intermediate uphill if it is the single track and not too difficult tech but not beginner.

This trail was perfect for a relaxing spin with the wife. The scenery was gorgeous, the trail was mostly easy, with a few challenging sections thrown in to keep things interesting. While Midland was fun, I'm looking forward to getting back here to try out some of the other trails that connect to Midland--seems like they have more potential

Midland is a beautiful trail that can get very hot. I would recommend bringing a good camera and riding the trail in the morning because most of it is on the western side of the mountain. I did this from downtown BV and accidentally hopped onto a hiker only trail that wasn't marked (oops), but it was really fun. I wouldn't drive to BV to ride this, but next time I go rafting I'll hit up Midland again.* Review edited 8/30/2011* Review edited 8/30/2011

Nice singletrack, good little climb to start the trail off. Rode it from the Arkansas River right off Main St, and the trail branched in a couple directions, and I have no idea if I stuck on the Midland trail or rode another one. Couple semi-technical sections, nothing overwhelming but enough to make you work a bit. Coming down's fast & fun. Took the girlfriend on the trail (beginner rider) and she enjoyed it, so it's that type of trail.

This is a fun trail with easy accessibility from the Buena Vista river park. If you start from the river park in town the first mile is a fairly challenging climb to the rail road grade. Once you hit the rolling single track it's pretty easy and a lot of fun.
