Military Ridge State Trail is a 40 mile "rail trail" from Dodgeville to Verona. It's a "rail trail" because although it rides like one, the grade was not built for the railroads. Instead, the grade is the remains of a pre-Civil War military route across Western Wisconsin. Besides the awesome history, this trail provides great access to some of the Driftless Zone's (a hilly area oddly not plowed over by the glaciers) best state parks (like Blue Mound State Park, which has a great MTB trail system) without actually having to pedal over the hills of the Driftless Zone. Beautiful farmland will also accompany you along the way. Lastly, the trail gradually descends from Dodgeville, so if you want a little extra help from gravity, it won't be hard to find.
