This trail is a combination of walking tracks and four wheel drive tracks. It's the kind of trail you do for the adventure, the challenge and the scenery rather than the riding pleasure.
The tracks take you round the western shores of Lake Wanaka with stunning views back across the lake towards town. There are some beautiful sheltered beaches along the way.
After about 10km you cross Rambling Burn (a creek!) and face a sustained 300 metre climb up a four wheel drive track onto a terrace. After another 4kms you'll reach Minaret Burn. You can follow a hiking track up that creek for perhaps seven kilometres to a hut but it would be more sensible to walk it! Most riders just go to beautiful Colquhouns Beach for a swim and a picnic.
Before heading out you should pick up the Minaret Burn brochure at the Mount Aspiring DOC office in Wanaka.
