Mountain Biking Monagas

#2 of 37 mountain bike trails in Puerto Rico
#1,902 in the world

Monagas Mountain Bike Trails are located at the municipality of Bayamon, which is inside Puerto Rico's metropolitan area. The trail network is inside the Julio E. Monagas National Park and is composed of around 15 trails that run throughout the park. They are properly identified with signs marking the entry and exit points, and direction arrows throughout the routes.

They are identified at their entry points with difficulty level logos which makes it easier for newcomers to know which trail to tackle first. The park is located in which as an US Army location, so throughout the park one can see old bunkers and watch posts.

The trails are composed of single-tracks with lots of roots present throughout the trails. There are some streams of water that needs to be crossed though the wooden bridges in place, and some natural "staircases" formed by the large roots, which combined with the uphill location of the roots and the narrow of the track throw the technical part to the mix. The list of trails currently active on the network are:
-La Caverna
-Mirador
-El Lago
-Cuesta Las Marias
-Las Tablas
-Magic Kingdom I
-Magic Kingdom II
-Los Columpios
-La Ceiba
-Los Picapiedras
-Boys Scouts
-Triple Cuesta
-Blair Witch
-Hobbits
-Almendros

As previously mentioned, the trails are located inside a forest park, so rain in the months of October to February is normal in the area which can render some of the trails unusable. But hey, it's the Caribbean! So a couple of continuous days of sun and all trails are back. For more information about this location you can call the Park offices at (787) 269-6600 & (787) 269-6603.

Great park with many (about 15) technical trails. The trails and their difficulty are clearly identified, although I'd say that this is definitely not a place for beginner's to ride. Lots of roots and rocks make this a challenging (but extremely fun) place to bike. Beware of hikers, joggers and people doing many other activities on the trails and fire roads. Also, ride with caution since there are several dangerous drops. The best place to hone your technical skills is right here.

fun set of trails as long as it hasnt rained in the previous month. i prefer to start the trail system by letting the stray dogs at the onsite police station chase me up the double track to the top of the hill then ride the tight singletrack side trails back down.

Twisty singletracks with lots of roots/rocks in some areas. This trail is located at Bayamon, PR if you take the exit signaling road 5 you will see the signs. This is a challenging trail, has some trails that area very difficult, downhills and technical areas but always fun. Downside is the poor soil drainage.

It's not actually one trail but many 1 mile(ish) trails that interconnect throughout the whole park. Its mostly singletrack with lots of roots and rocks to keep it interesting. It has some steep downhills, some freeride stuff and jumps. Its a great after work ride since this park is right in the middle of the metropolitan area(altough once you're inside you could never tell). The only thing that prevented me to give it 5 stars is that it has poor drainage and if it rains hard for 1 day, it takes about 1 week to dry.
