It's a pretty terrible track without much riding interest and was partly washed out when I was there. It is mainly used by super-fit riders and hikers who have ridden or hiked up Kirwans Track and are returning via Montgomery Hut. They are going down-river - the opposite direction to how the track is described here and on the Reefton Mountain Biking brochure...

To get from Reefton to Montgomery Hut you drive or ride to the end of Gannons Road and ride what is called the Waitahu Valley Track to the point where a swing bridge crosses the Waitahu River. It used to be grade 2. The same track continues on up the valley - you don't cross the bridge! - under the name "Montgomerie Hut". It used to be grade 3. Nowadays they are both grade 3 tracks with push-or-carry obstacles. (...Got it!!!:))
