Mountain Biking Mount Vernon Trail
#85 of 193 mountain bike trails in South Island
The Mount Vernon Track sidles round the 'mountain' parallel to the summit road so there is not a lot of climbing but there are some undulations! The trail varies from rocky and technical to smooth and fast with bermed corners. This trail packs in a lot of variety into less than three kilometres! The final descent with views of Lyttleton Harbour ahead is awesome. It's a wonderful step up from the preceding Bowenvale Traverse that you probably rode to get here...
You can ride the trail either way so you can start from the top of the Rapaki Track which is the best way to ride up to Summit Road from Christchurch. On fine weekends you will encounter many riders whichever way you go.

If you drive here, the Mount Vernon car park is 6.5km along the Summit Road from the Sign of the Kiwi at the top of the Dyers Pass Road from Christchurch. More likely you rode here from the Bowenvale Traverse Track and found the start of this track right across the road! Alternatively, if you're riding west to east you start at the car park on top of the Rapaki Track.
On a fine, clear day this trail is food for the soul and endorphins for the body. It's another great link in a chain of awesome trails along the Summit Road.
