Mountain Biking Nimblewill Gap Rd
#359 of 403 mountain bike trails in Georgia
This is the new start/finish mostly gravel section of 2016 Fools Gold 50- and 100-mile MTB Race ... used the race route map, but started at Nimblewill Church for convenience heading towards the race venue, riding an out-n-back . ~ 13 miles from Nimblewill Church, west on Nimblewill Church Rd until the pavement on Old Bucktown Rd (turn-around point) in Ellijay. Can also be ridden as part of a BIG loop including Springer Mtn/Winding Stair.

Starting on Nimblewill Church Rd & FS 28-1 intersection, go west on Nimblewill Church Rd (race-finish direction), continue *straight* past the Nimblewill Church, onto Nimblewill Gap Rd. (Nimblewill Church Rd goes left here ... don't go left.) Nimblewill Gap Rd starts out paved, and rolls for a couple miles, before becoming a smooth dirt road with some spectacular car-camping sites along Nimblewill Creek. It gradually gets more gravelly, progressing to rat-heads, cat-heads, a cinderblock-sized rock or 2 before you get to the top. You'll know you're getting close to the top when you see Springer Mountain looming above you in the distance. At the top of Nimblewill Gap, there's a clearing with a memorial/historic lectern-style marker. An AT approach trail crosses here (blue blazes). Amicaliua Mt Rd/FS 46 goes up to the left; it goes to Amicalola Falls, not the race venue. So go straight through the intersection/DOWN a really fun rocky descent for 3.5 miles until you get to pavement. Race venue is 3.5 miles of pavement beyond this point; turned around here. (Now you're going in race start direction.)
This is probably what Tibbs looked like 40 years ago when it was drive-able, except Tibbs is steeper. There's a great description of this, as the start/finish section: http://mountaingoatadventures.com/foolsgold/course
