Mountain Biking North Backbone
#234 of 1,396 mountain bike trails in Colorado
This trail is 3.2 miles in one direction. You can either ride up to it via the singletrack and or you can access it by riding up CR 175 (Ute Trail). Both ends of this trail are at roughly the same elevation, so there are no serious climbs or descents along it. Still, the trail is rolling, so be prepared to do some pedaling!
North Backbone is very narrow and pretty technical in spots. There's exposure, tough turns, great views, rock gardens, tough climbs, sand, cliff overhangs, and more... enjoy!

there are three ways to get in to the town of Salida, from Colroado 291 from Buena vista. hwy 50 from Poncha Springs and hwy 50 from canyon city. from Salida look for F street and go over the F street Bridge. the road ends and leads you in to a parking area. From there you must bike over railroad tracks. You can take the Front Side Trail or Bike up to CR 177.
Really cool technical trail with some decent short punchy climbs and techy sections. Loves some of the skinny rock gulches you had to pass thru. Highly recommend this out and back trail.
Thank |Grreat trail as part of the Arkansas Hills trail system. This is a nice piece of singeltrack, and it is on the more technical side in comparison to the rest of the system.
Thank |This trail is not for beginners! It is awesome if you are good in tight trails with big rocks. We got dropped off at the top si it was all downhill which was awesome.
Thank |Rode north out of town and started this tail from Ute Trail to the south to connect back to S mountain. Had a blast! The locals have done a great job building this into a fun trail. Stay on your toes: plenty of little techy spots, but mostly just winding fun through the junipers and pinons. Enjoy!
Thank |What a fun and challenging trail. Great if you're an advance intermediate or expert rider. Can't wait to make another trip from GA to ride this again.
Thank |This was a varied, fun, and techie out-n-back. As an intermediate plus rider, North Backbone was a Sunday cruz of 30 minutes out and 25 minutes back. The mid-section provides advanced moves, and if you miss you will leave a little blood, I got close a few times! Will need to ride a few times to know what is coming.
Overall, great trail that changes up the S-Mountain experience. Huge views of the Ark Valley and 14ers, so even if you need to walk some areas worth the ride! For the advanced rider, this is a power ride; intermediate side, this trail will push you and make you better.
Thank |This is a varied, consistently entertaining stretch of singletrack with some fast&flowy, some narrow&techy and plenty of roller coaster ups and downs. It's either a singletrack out and back or a loop with a lot of road.
Thank |Excellent trail! I crashed hard on it and got pretty beat up, but I still loved it!
Update: this trail is just excellent! The views, the narrow tread, the challenging rocks.... this is such a mixed bag that a little bit of everything will get thrown at you, but it's a truly awesome experience! Definitely recommend it as an out-and-back.
