A mountain bike with a red and white frame is propped up on a large rock, surrounded by lush green trees. Nearby, a gray helmet with a yellow star design lies on the ground, suggesting an outdoor biking adventure. The scene captures the essence of a rugged, natural landscape ideal for mountain biking. Mountain Biking Op Schnabel Park

****   Add a review
#45 of 279 mountain bike trails in Texas
#1,708 in the world

This park has a lot of rocky terrain. There is even a homemade BMX style area where you can fly in the air like birds (just watch the low hanging branches). There is a really good single-track trail that follows a dry creek bed for miles. There are also some good drops and downhill areas for you free ride guys. The upper part of the park is a decent area for beginners but it gets a little more technical down in the lower end of the park (along of creek bed). There are usually hikers around the upper part of the park but it is usually pretty "hiker-free" in the more technical areas. A great park overall though.

Getting there
In San Antonio, take IH 410 to HWY. 16 (Bandera Rd.) and go north 4.5 miles. The park entrance is on the right (there is a sign that reads, OP Schnabel Park." Once you enter the park you can either take a left into the first parking lot (the trail begins on the right side of the lot) or take a left at the first STOP sign. The parking lot is on the right (up from the pavilion). The trail head is on the right side of the parking lot (as you enter the lot).

Like others have said only a good ride if you take the time to pick out all the good trails along the paved area;the trails kind of meander around the paved trail. Been riding here for ~3years and I have a good smooth run set up throughout this area, and after this long it is still entertaining

The trail system is intermediate to advance. The trails are great for every type of rider experience level with the exception of picking the best path. I have been trail riding OP for about 10 years and it always packs a punch!

I used to ride this park ten years ago. Much improved since then. Light rain yesterday 2/15/15. Pretty slick, had lots of fun. Wetness made some technical climbs a real challenge.

Just rode these trails for the 1st time. It was very difficult to figure out where to go. Simply stated, its chaotic. You certainly can't get into a flow. Just when you think you've found a trail worth riding it might dead end or end up back on the pavement. There are a lot of limbs and branches covering the trails. Some of the trails were very overgrown. I will so that I only rode the area near the OP Schnabel trail head before giving up and going to the pavement. So, maybe there is another area that is better but I didn't find it.

To reinforce other comments, the upper section has lots of winding trails, some rocky/rooty. Low trees were trouble for me (6'8")
Better to get down to the river bed, and go up/down Leon Creek. Trails extend down the creek beyond OP Schnabel. No real elevation change. You can work your way back up on the paved trail or find some good trails back to OP.
I suggest you take your phone (GPS enabled) to figure out where you are, and help find your way back to parking.

Reminds me of Mcallister park, only a little tech riding here. Again never had to get off my bike. Not hard to follow but has a lot of side trails that I wish I knew went to. There's a really cool creek bed that provides some jumps and technical rock practice. Bring mosquito spray

Didn't like the way the trails were set up, no markers, poor flow. There were some highlights thou some fun downhill, a few little jumps, and links in with lots of other close parks

I've been to every place there is to ride in San Antonio and this one is by far my favorite. It really does have a great mix of everything no matter what you feel like.

Great all around trail. Some areas are quite eroded. There are a few jumps available and the "roller coaster" is a lot of fun! The "front loop" is fast and curvy. Lots of fun to ride. The trails around the creek is technical and tight. You can make it as easy or difficult as you want base on the trails you choose to ride in here.

This trail or the serie of trails is quite easy to follow as the trails are following the bed of the dry river banks. Some parts are very tecnical with boulders, others ups and downs impossible but nice to try. The rest is long singles tracks with the beginning of a bike park in the north part. Lots of dead end as developments are reaching the river bank like everywhere else.

COULDN'T REALLY GIVE ONE TRAIL DESCRIPTION... OP HAS ALOT TO OFFER. SINGLETRACK,JUMPS, DOWNHILL(ISH),CLIMBS ETC. THERE IS SOMETHING HERE FOR EVERYBODY. GREAT SCENERY. TRAILS MARKED WELL UP TOP. ONCE YOUR IN THE CREEK BED YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN. ACTUALLY IT'S HARD TO GET LOST. FOR DIRT JUMPS, ONE SET IS AT THE NORTH END OF THE CREEK BED BURIED IN TREES.. DON'T BOTHER, LOOKS MORE LIKE HOBO HEAVEN...KEEP GOING EAST TO THE WHOOP SECTION, IT'S PRETTY COOL, OR EVEN FURTHER PAST PRUE RD. BRIDGE TO MORE DIRT JUMPS...HAVE FUN! THATS WHY WE GO....(TIP... WHERE WE PARKED THERE WAS A RADIO TOWER NEAR BY, YOU CAN SEE IT FOR MILES...IT HELPED US KEEP OUR BEARINGS TO GET BACK.).....LATER

APPARENTLY SOME FOLKS THOUGHT IT A WAS A GOOD IDEA TO DESTROY ONE OF CENTRAL TEXAS FINER MOUNTAIN BIKING AREAS. THE CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION BIKE AND HIKE TRAIL WILL AMOUNT TO NOTHING BUT A PLACE TO WALK YOUR POODLE. 2 LANE HIGHWAYS HAVE REPLACED THE ONCE COOL SINGLE TRACK. MOUNTAIN BIKERS DON'T WASTE TIME AND GAS COMING HERE. * Review edited 11/29/2008* Review edited 11/29/2008* Review edited 11/29/2008* Review edited 11/29/2008

I found the BMX ramps at Cross-country practice, which the team has nicknamed "Rollercoasters". Wouldn't recommend at night; a friend broke his leg when he tried going there at night. When I lived in Texas, I went there, or Mc***er at least once a week with my friends.

The trails were fun, but poorly marked. I wound up going around in circles and this made it frustrating. It's a place to visit for the first time with someone who's familiar with the trails.

The main entrance off of Bandera Rd is closed until Feb 16, 2006. Instead turn onto Bresnahan (one block east) and then left onto Hetherington which will take you into the park. There's something here for everybody from shaddy flat singeltrack to tight switchbacks and steep hills.
